Gluten Free Chocolate Dump Cake
While this recipe has the word “cake” in the title, it’s important to know that the texture of this dessert is slightly different than a traditional cake. When the chocolate cake mix is combined with the other ingredients, it results in more of a cross between a brownie and a cake, with a creamy center thanks to the chocolate chips.

And while it doesn’t have the same texture as a cake, it’s still super delicious! But my favorite part about this gluten free party food recipe is that you only need a few ingredients to make it. To prepare your own chocolate dump cake, you’ll need:
- Gluten free chocolate cake mix. You can use any brand of gluten free chocolate cake mix to prepare this dessert, but I highly recommend Krusteaz cake mix.
- Instant chocolate pudding. Most chocolate pudding is naturally gluten free, so you can use any brand you want for this part of the recipe. Just make sure to check the label to be sure your brand doesn’t contain gluten.
- Unsalted butter
- Milk
- Chocolate chips. I used semi-sweet chocolate chips to balance out the sweetness of the M&Ms, but any type of chocolate chip will work!
- M&Ms
What is the best gluten free chocolate cake mix?
Using the best ingredients is the key to making delicious gluten free desserts! And when it comes to the best chocolate cake mix, I recommend Krusteaz cake mix. You can find this brand in most grocery stores, making it a great option.
But if you can’t find that brand where you are, there are a few other good chocolate cake mixes to choose from, like:
- Bob’s Red Mill gluten free chocolate cake mix
- Betty Crocker gluten free Devil’s food cake mix
- King Arthur Flour gluten free chocolate cake mix
How to Make Gluten Free Chocolate Dump Cake
You only need a few minutes of prep work to make this quick and easy summer dessert, which means it’s perfect for your next party! Just mix the ingredients, add a few toppings, and pop it in the oven for a flavorful sweet treat that’s sure to be a hit.

Start by combining the gluten free cake mix with the chocolate pudding in the bottom of your 9×13 baking dish. Lightly whisk the ingredients until they’re mixed.

After that, add the melted butter and milk to the pan and slowly whisk the ingredients together until the mixture begins to thicken. Try to get as much of the dry ingredients mixed into the liquid as you can to help the cake bake evenly.
I would suggest giving the butter time to cool slightly before adding it to the pan with the milk. Combining hot butter with cold milk could cause the butter to solidify or the milk to curdle.

Once you have the ingredients of the cake layer mixed up and ready to go, it’s time to add your toppings. First, sprinkle the chocolate chips in an even layer over the top of the cake mix. Then add the M&Ms over the top of the chocolate chips.

Place the dump cake in the oven to bake for 40 to 45 minutes, until the cake is done baking and the chocolate on top is melted.

On top of being simple to make, this cake mix recipe is also easy to adjust. Try these recipe ideas to create a delicious dessert for any occasion.
- Serve it with toppings. This yummy chocolate dessert is delicious on it’s own thanks to the melted chocolate on top. But adding a scoop of ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream on top takes the flavor over the edge!
- Try different candy toppings. One of the easiest ways to change up this recipe is to add different candy topping. You could try different flavors of M&Ms (peanut, caramel, peanut butter, etc.) or add chopped up candy bars to the top, like Snickers or Reese’s cups. You could also leave off the candy altogether and just stick with chocolate chips on top.
- Use traditional chocolate cake mix. While this recipe is designed to be a gluten free dessert, there’s no reason you can’t prepare it with regular cake mix if you don’t have an issue with gluten! Simply replace the gluten free cake mix with regular chocolate cake mix and follow the recipe as written.
