The best part about these easy dip cups is the simple list of ingredients. To make this easy layered taco dip recipe, you’ll need:

  • Refried beans: The first layer in your taco dip cups is refried beans. You could also use bean dip for this part of the recipe.
  • Cream cheese, sour cream, and taco season: On top of the beans is a layer of cream cheese taco dip made up of softened cream cheese, sour cream, and taco seasoning.
  • Salsa: Next is a layer of salsa. You can choose your favorite type of salsa for this layer, varying the consistency and heat level to your liking.
  • Shredded cheese: Just like a real taco, this taco dip is made with shredded cheese. For this recipe, I used taco blend cheese, but cheddar cheese or Monterrey jack would also taste amazing!
  • Green onion: Add a little freshness to your taco cups with the help of some chopped green onion.
  • Lettuce: Next, add a layer of chopped lettuce to the top of your jars to give the dip some crunch.
  • Cherry tomatoes: Finish with a pop of color by adding some tomatoes to the top of each jar. I used cherry tomatoes, but any variety would work!

How to Make Layered Taco Dip Cups

After gathering up your ingredients, it’s time to start layering your taco dip. So, gather up your ingredients and let’s start mixing!

cream cheese taco dip

The first step is to create the cream cheese layer of the dip. Combine the cream cheese, sour cream, and taco seasoning in a bowl. Stir to thoroughly mix the ingredients.

After the ingredients are well combined, transfer the mixture to a piping bag or gallon sized plastic bag. Cut the tip off the bag so you have a large opening at the end. This will make it easier to fill each jar without making a mess.

Next, spoon you refried beans or bean dip into a piping bag. Cut the end off the bag so the opening is large enough to squirt the bean dip out without it getting stuck.

Squeeze a small amount of dip into the bottom of each jar. You can add around one half inch of each ingredient to the jar if you’re using half pint mason jars like mine.

Top the beans with your cream cheese mixture. Pipe around one half inch of the cream cheese dip over the top of the beans, making the top of the layer as smooth as possible.

After that, use a spoon to add the salsa to the top of the cream cheese layer. You can add two to three tablespoons of salsa to this layer of the cup.

Then, sprinkle the chopped green onions over the top of the salsa. Sprinkle the pieces of onion around the edges of the jar so they’re visible when all the layers are added.

Now it’s time to add the shredded cheese! Add around 1/4 cup of cheese to each jar for the best flavor.

After that, all you need to do is top your taco dip with some fresh ingredients! I used shredded lettuce and cherry tomatoes, but there are several other delicious toppings you could use, including:

  • Sliced jalapeno peppers
  • Black olives that are thinly sliced
  • Chopped cilantro
  • Sliced avocadoes

What Can I Serve with Taco Dip Cups?

Now that you have your taco appetizer is ready to go, you’re probably wondering what to serve with it. Since the jars are tall, you’ll need long dippers to ensure you get all the delicious layers in each bite! These options are a great choice:

  • Tortilla strips or corn chips
  • Pretzel rods
  • Rectangular crackers (like Townhouse)
  • Veggies, like carrot sticks, mini bell peppers, or celery

Taco Dip Cups Storage and Serving

How Long Can Taco Dip Sit Out? Since this dip is made with cream cheese, the longest I would recommend letting this dip sit out is two hours. After that, it’s a good idea to refrigerate the dip until you’re ready to eat it again. Before placing the dip in the refrigerator, be sure to place the lids on the jars to keep the lettuce from wilting.

How Long Can I Keep Taco Dip in the Fridge? If you cover your dip and keep it refrigerated, it will stay good for up to four days. Make sure to keep the lids on the jars when storing them in the refrigerator to keep the cream cheese from hardening and the lettuce from wilting.

Why Does My Taco Dip Get Watery? Since this dip is layered with salsa, you might notice excess moisture building up after you’ve added all the layers. To keep the dip from becoming watery, it’s best to use a chunkier salsa with less liquid. As you’re adding the salsa to the jar over the top of the cream cheese layer, use a fork to scoop the salsa out of the jar. This will help the extra moisture drip off the tomatoes and other salsa ingredients, keeping your dip from getting watered down as it sits.
