What is a Taco Cheese Ball Made Of?

To make this easy Mexican cheese ball recipe, you’ll need just six simple ingredients:

  • Cream cheese: To create a thick and sturdy base for your cheese ball, it’s best to use cream cheese. Make sure to start with softened, full-fat cream cheese so it’s easy to mix and mold, then chill the ball to allow it to harden before serving.
  • Sour cream: You can’t have tacos without sour cream, which means you wouldn’t want to make any taco flavored appetizer without sour cream either! The sour cream adds some tang to your cheese ball and helps make it a little easier to blend and mold. Just make sure to to add too much or your cheese ball won’t set up properly.
  • Taco seasoning: The key to adding taco flavor to your dip without the use of taco meat is adding some taco seasoning. You can use store-bought taco seasoning or make your own. But if you’re hoping to keep this recipe gluten free, always be sure to check the ingredients of your seasoning packet before mixing it with the rest of the dip ingredients.
  • Shredded cheese: Add to the cheesiness of this yummy appetizer with the help of taco blend shredded cheese. Blend I used in my recipe contains cheddar, monterrey jack, asardaro, and queso quesadilla.
  • Green onion: With the help of some chopped green onion, you can add a ton of flavor and freshness to your cheese ball. This addition also makes a great garnish for the top of your dip when you’re ready to serve it!
  • Doritos: After the cheese ball is formed and you’re ready to serve it, add some crunch and nacho flavor with the help of nacho cheese Doritos. The crushed Doritos will coat the outside of the cheese ball.

How to Make a Taco Cheese Ball

This easy recipe contains similar ingredients to a traditional cream cheese taco dip. The only difference is that this dip is formed into a ball and rolled in Doritos before serving! Keep reading to get all the tips and tricks you’ll need to make your own cheese ball at home.

The first step is to make sure you’re starting with room temperature ingredients. Before you plan to prepare your dip, don’t forget to remove the cream cheese from the refrigerator and let it sit at room temperature for at least one hour.

If you did forget to take your cream cheese out of the fridge, you can also heat the cream cheese in the microwave for 15 to 20 seconds to help soften it. Just make sure to cover the bowl with a paper towel because the cream cheese could pop as it warms, making a mess in your microwave!

After the cream cheese is softened, add the sour cream to the bowl with it and stir until the two ingredients are well combined.

Next, add the taco seasoning, green onion, and shredded cheese to the bowl. Stir to mix all the ingredients until each item is fully mixed into the cream cheese base.

After that, lay a piece of plastic wrap out on your counter. Use a spoon to scoop the dip ingredients into the shape of a ball, then transfer the ball to your plastic wrap. Spray your hands with nonstick cooking spray or dampen them with a little bit of water to help keep the cream cheese from sticking. Then, carefully form the dip into a ball with your hands, smoothing the top and sides.

When you’re satisfied with the shape of your ball, bring the sides up around the cheese ball to fully cover it with the plastic wrap. Place the ball in the refrigerator and chill it for at least an hour. You can store the cheese ball in the fridge up to overnight before serving it.

Taco cheese ball with doritos

When you’re ready to serve your nacho cheese ball, place the Doritos in a large bag and crush them with a rolling pin. Continue crushing until the chips are chopped into fine crumbs.

Transfer the cheese ball to the bag with the crushed chips and roll it around in the chips until it’s fully coated. Then, place the covered cheese ball on your serving plate. Take a look at the ball to make sure it’s fully covered and press Doritos into any bare spots with your hands. You may also need to use your hands to reshape the ball if it’s become distorted as you were coating it in chips.

Is a Taco Cheese Ball Gluten Free?

If you’re wondering whether taco cheese balls are gluten free, the answer is it depends. While some recipes don’t use any gluten-containing ingredients, others do. That’s why it’s a good idea to make your own appetizer instead of relying on someone else. That way, you know exactly what’s in the recipe before you eat it.

While Doritos are not labeled as gluten free, they aren’t made with any gluten containing ingredients. That means you’ll need to use your discretion when adding these chips to your cheese ball.

If you’re sensitive to cross contamination, there’s a simple substitute you can make to ensure your taco cheese ball is safe to eat. Instead of coating your cheese ball with Doritos, use crushed corn chips or tortilla chips. Both options are great gluten free alternatives you can use in place of Doritos~

How Do You Store a Cheese Ball?

Since this dip is made with cream cheese, the longest I would recommend letting this cheese ball sit out is two hours. After that, it’s a good idea to refrigerate the cheese ball until you’re ready to eat it again. Before placing the dip in the refrigerator, be sure to cover it with plastic wrap to keep the cream cheese from hardening.
