On top of being quick and easy to make, these cute appetizers are also fun to eat! And you can make them an interactive event at your party by letting your party guests make it themselves.

Walking Nachos

You’re going to love just how simple these fun walking nacho appetizers are to make! That’s because all you have to do is prepare the toppings and let your guests make it themselves.

Just set out the topping options and let your party guests start putting these fun appetizers together instantly! All you need to make your own walking nacho snacks is:

  • Individual chip bags. The key to making these cute individual appetizers is to use individual bags of chips. We used individual bags of Doritos and Fritos, but you could also use small bags of tortilla chips, too!
  • Taco meat. Prepare your taco meat by combining ground beef with taco seasoning. Allow the beef to simmer in the sauce, until the sauce thickens, then transfer the meat to a serving dish.
  • Refried beans. Warm up a can of refried beans or bean dip or make it from scratch to serve your guests.
  • Nacho cheese sauce. Provide your party guests with nacho cheese or queso to slather over their chips!
  • Shredded fiesta blend cheese. You can use any shredded cheese flavor, including cheddar, Monterrey jack, or pepper jack.
  • Salsa. Mild, medium, or hot salsa are all great options for this appetizer idea.
  • Sour cream. You can use full fat or reduced fat sour cream to make your own nachos.
  • Jalapeno slices. Pickled or fresh jalapeno slices are a great way to add some spice to your nachos in a bag.

How to Make Walking Nachos

The key to making these easy walking appetizers is prepping all the ingredients in advance. That makes them quick and easy to prepare for (or at!) your party.

fritos nachos

Start by using a pair of scissors to cut the top off of all your chip bags. This will ensure the chip bags are open evenly and help prevent the bags from ripping.

Then, roll the top of the bag down to help keep the bag open, making it easier to add the rest of your nacho ingredients.

doritos nachos

Add the taco meat to the bag. I found that using a taco holder is a great way to hold the chip bags open, making it easier to fill them with toppings!

After adding the taco meat, it’s time to add the beans. We used refried beans, but you could also add bean dip to your nacho bar at your party.

nacho cheese doritos

After that, drizzle your nacho cheese over the top of the chips. We love using Fritos mild cheddar for our nachos, but any cheese sauce or queso dip will work!

Add more cheese to your nachos by using some shredded cheese, too. We used fiesta blend cheese but any of your favorite cheese blends will work for your own nachos in a bag.

Now grab your salsa and spoon a little bit over the top of the rest of the toppings. Provide your party guests with a few different spice levels to give them a variety of options!

The last two toppings are optional because not everyone likes them — sour cream and jalapenos! Top your walking nachos with a dollop of sour cream, then spice things up with a couple slices of pickled or fresh jalapeno before digging in.

These portable appetizers are a fun option for any party with kids and adults! And the best part about this easy recipe is that your party guests can make it themselves.

Instead of making these snacks and serving them already prepared, try setting up a walking nacho bar at your party! In addition to providing your party guests with the basic ingredients for nachos, you can set out these other items to allow your guests to create their own fun appetizers:

  • Sliced black olives
  • Diced tomatoes
  • Sauted bell peppers and onions
  • Shredded chicken
  • Black beans
  • Sliced avocado
  • Guacamole
  • Pico de gallo
  • Grilled corn
  • Chopped red onion
  • Fresh cilantro
  • Pulled pork
  • Chopped green onions
  • Chili
  • Carne asada

How Long Do Walking Nachos Last?

Once your walking nachos are prepared, they should be eaten right away. I wouldn’t suggest making the appetizers ahead of time or storing them after they’re prepared. The chips will begin to get soggy the longer the toppings sit inside the bag.

How Do I Eat Walking Nachos?

Just like any type of nachos, walking nachos can get a little messy! If you don’t mind getting your fingers a little dirty, you can eat them with your hands. Simply shake up the bag to mix the toppings onto the chips, then dig in!

But if you’re not a fan of messy hands, these walking nachos can also be eaten with a fork. Use the fork to slightly smash the chips, then scoop up the chips and toppings.
