Gluten Free Fried Pickles Recipe
The trick to making this delicious gluten free fried pickles recipe is double-dipping them in a gluten free batter followed by a dip in gluten free breadcrumbs. That way, you have a nice coating of crunch on top of the crunchy pickles. So good!!!
The first step to making your gluten free fried pickles is soaking as much pickle juice out of the pickles as you can. Place your pickles on a single row on top of a paper towel, then place another paper towel on top. Soaking up all the liquid from the pickles will ensure your batter sticks to the pickles as you fry them.

Are Pickles Gluten Free?
I have good news for you if you’re wondering are pickles gluten free — they are! If you take a look at the ingredients on most pickles, you’ll see that almost all brands have gluten free dill pickles. My favorite pickles for making my fried pickles gluten free is Vlasic. On top of not having any gluten, these pickles have a great crunch, which is perfect for making gluten free deep fried pickles.
What Pickles are Gluten Free?
Most brands of pickles have gluten free dill pickles, which means you shouldn’t have a problem finding delicious gluten free pickles for your gluten free fried pickles recipe. If you’re wondering which brands of pickles are labeled gluten free, these brands all offer gluten free pickles:
- B&G Pickles
- Boar’s Head
- McClure’s
- Mt. Olive
Are Fried Pickles Gluten Free?
While plain pickles are gluten free, fried pickles usually aren’t. That’s because most people use flour and breadcrumbs to coat their pickles before frying them. And since flour and breadcrumbs are both no-nos when you’re gluten intolerant, you can’t enjoy traditional fried pickles. But that doesn’t mean you can’t make them yourself! My easy recipe replaces those gluten filled ingredients with gluten free ingredients to make some delicious gluten free deep fried pickles.
How to Make Batter for Fried Pickles
While your pickles are drying, gather up your ingredients. I have found that when making gluten free recipes, brands matter! This is especially true for gluten free versions of ingredients that traditionally contain gluten, like flour and bread crumbs.
My favorite gluten free flour is Bob’s Red Mill 1-to-1 gluten free baking flour. I use it for everything I make gluten free, whether I’m baking or not! And for this recipe, I used 4C gluten free bread crumbs. They have a nice panko-like texture that’s perfect for these gluten free fried pickles.
Start mixing up your batter by whisking together your dry ingredients — gluten free flour, baking powder, black pepper, paprika, and the secret ingredient — a pinch of cayenne. That pinch of hot pepper adds a nice punch to the batter, making it the perfect Southern-style appetizer!
Next, add your milk and eggs to the dry batter and whisk to combine all the ingredients. Your batter should be slightly thick, similar to the consistency of thick pancake batter.
Now it’s time to start making your gluten free fried pickles! Remove the pickles from the paper towels and dip each pickle into the batter. Make sure each pickle is fully coated with batter before you remove it from the bowl.
How to Make Fried Pickles with Bread Crumbs
After removing the pickles from the batter, dip it directly into your gluten free bread crumbs. I like using a small, deep bowl for this to make sure you get plenty of bread crumbs on each of your gluten free fried pickles.
This next step may seem silly, especially if you can’t wait to try these delicious gluten free fried pickles, but don’t skip it! After dipping each pickle in the batter and bread crumbs, set them on a plate or tray and allow them to rest for a few minutes. This resting period will give the batter a chance to adhere to the pickles, ensuring it won’t slide off when you put it in the hot oil.
While your pickles are resting, pour your vegetable oil in a large skillet or sauce pan. I suggest adding at least an inch of oil to the pan. Warm the oil over medium heat, then reduce to medium-low before adding the pickles. Place the pickles in the hot oil for at least five minutes. The pickles will be done when the batter is golden brown. Place the gluten free fried pickles on a paper-towel lined plate to cool. Then, enjoy!

Hi Michelle! I usually just dip them in ranch dressing.
Hey, this recipe looks really tasty! I’m wondering if you’ve tried it with a milk substitute? I’d like to sub in something non-dairy if possible, do you have any recommendations? Thanks!
I haven’t tried this recipe with a milk substitute, but I think unsweetened almond milk would probably work!
