Dog Themed Birthday Party Treats
Cereal treats make the perfect party snack for a kid’s birthday party! And when you add in some chocolate and peanut butter, you have a yummy snack that makes a great dog themed birthday party treat, too.

What I love most about these simple no-bake cereal treats is that you only need a handful of ingredients to make them. Here’s what you need to make your own dog bone rice krispies treats:
- Cocoa Pebbles (or chocolate Rice Krispies)
- Marshmallows
- Butter
- Chocolate chips
- Peanut butter
- Peanut butter chips
In addition to the ingredients listed above, you’ll also need a dog bone shaped cookie cutter to turn these cereal treats into dog treats. I found mine at Hobby Lobby, but you can also grab one on Amazon.

This simple recipe couldn’t be easier to make. In fact, if you’ve ever made rice krispies treats before, the recipe is very similar. The only change is adding in some chocolate and peanut butter for extra flavor.
To make things super simple, I suggest measuring out all your ingredients before you start cooking. Once the marshmallows melt, you’ll need to work fast to incorporate all the ingredients before the marshmallows start to cool. To start, you’ll need to measure out your Cocoa Pebbles.

After that, measure your chocolate chips, peanut butter, and marshmallows. Don’t add the peanut butter chips at this point. Instead, you’ll use those to decorate the top of your dog bone treats.

Once you have all your ingredients measured and ready to go, you can start cooking. You can make these treats two different ways:
- On the stovetop: Place your butter in the bottom of a large stockpot and cook over medium low heat until it melts. Add the marshmallows, chocolate chips, and peanut butter. Stirring constantly, heat the ingredients until they are all melted and well incorporated.
- In the microwave: Place the butter in a large, microwave-safe bowl. Heat on high for 30 seconds, until butter is melted. Add the marshmallows, peanut butter, and chocolate chips. Heat on high in 30 second intervals, stirring between each interval, until the ingredients are melted and incorporated.

No matter which method you use to melt your ingredients, the next step of the process is the same: stir in the cereal. If you’re cooking your ingredients on the stovetop, be sure to remove the pan from the heat source before adding the cereal or the marshmallows will burn on the bottom. Pour in the cereal and stir until all the cereal is coated with marshmallows and chocolate.

After the ingredients are mixed, spread the cereal mixture over a 9×13 baking sheet and press into the pan until a solid layer is formed. Allow the cereal bars to rest on the counter for around 30 minutes to give the ingredients time to cool.
When the bars have cooled, use your dog bone shaped cookie cutter to cut shapes out of the cereal mixture. Since the bars will be hard at this point, I suggest placing a towel over the top of the cookie cutter as you press it into the cereal mixuter to keep it from hurting your hands.

Continue cutting until all the treats have been cut into dog bone shapes. Heat your peanut butter chips in the microwave for 30 seconds to melt them, then place the melted peanut butter in a piping bag. Drizzle the peanut butter over the top of each dog bone and allow it to cool completely before serving.
Dog Themed Party Treat Ideas
While these cute treats are perfect dog-themed party food as-is, there are a few different variations you can make to the recipe to suit your tastes and needs. These changes are a great idea for your puppy birthday party:
- Leave out the peanut butter. If you’re worried that someone at your party may have a peanut allergy, the peanut butter can be left out of these treats. If you do leave out the peanut butter, I suggest adding one more tablespoon of butter to help keep the marshmallow mixture smooth. After making the treats, simply drizzle melted chocolate over the top instead of peanut butter to decorate them.
- Use plain Rice Krispies. Another option is to use plain Rice Krispies instead of chocolate cereal. Make Rice Krispies treats according to the directions on the box, then use your dog bone cookie cutter to cut out the shapes for your treats.

Can I make this recipe ahead of time?
Yes! These treats can be made up to two days before the party. Just be sure to store them in an air-tight container at room temperature for best results. If you do plan to make these treats ahead of time, I suggest waiting until just before the party to decorate them with the peanut butter drizzle to prevent it from cracking before the party.
How long can I keep cereal treats?
These homemade cereal treats can be kept for up to five days when stored properly, but the longer you keep them, the dryer they become. Make sure to store them in an airtight container to keep them from hardening too quickly.
Are these treats gluten free?
Yes. All the ingredients in these treats are gluten free. When purchasing your chocolate and peanut butter chips, always check the label to ensure the package says they are gluten free. Some brands manufacture their chips in the same facility as gluten-containing foods, which could cause cross contamination. I used Kroger brand chocolate chips, which are clearly labeled gluten free. The peanut butter chips are Reese’s brand, which is also labeled as gluten free.
