Paper Plate Donut Craft

This adorable paper plate craft is so simple to make, which means it’s a great option for entertaining kids at a donut themed birthday party or keeping the kids occupied on a lazy afternoon.

But the best part about this simple DIY is that you need just handful of supplies you probably have laying around the house right now to make it. And if there’s something on the list that you don’t have, you can grab it at Dollar Tree!

Here’s what you need to make your own paper plate donuts with your kids:

• Paper plates. You can use any size paper plates to create your donut craft with your kids. Our craft was made with small 6-inch plates because that’s what we had at home already. Full-sized plates would also work to make larger donuts.
• Pink paint. To turn your plain white plates into cute donuts, you’ll need some pink paint. I suggest using acrylic craft paint because it provides a nice, thick coat.
• Pom poms and clothespins. To give the painted donuts a textured look, we used pom poms to paint the plates instead of a traditional paint brush. Use a clothespins to hold the pom poms in place while your kids paint to keep their hands from getting messy!
• Construction paper. Finish decorating your donut craft with some construction paper sprinkles. You’ll need a variety of colors to create the rainbow topping for your DIY.

How to Make a Paper Plate Donut

Now that you have all your supplies gathered up, it’s time to get crafty! Have some fun with your kids making your own donut DIY at home or in the classroom by following these easy instructions.

The first step to turning your paper plate into a donut is to do some painting. We used pink paint to give it the look of an iced donut. First, pour the paint onto a paper plate. Then, pinch the ends of the clothespin to open it. Place a pom pom in the center of the clip and close the clip to hold the pom pom in place.

After that, your kids can hold the end of the clothespin and dip the pom pom into the pink paint. Then, dab the paint all over the paper plate until it’s fully covered. The dabbing motion will help give the paint a more textured look when it’s dry!

When the paint is completely dry, fold each plate in half. Use scissors to cut out a half circle in the center of the donut. When you unfold it, the donut will have a full circle in the middle!

Then, cut the various colors of construction paper into a thin strip. After that, cut each strip into several small squares.

Using a glue stick or white school glue, cover the plate with glue. Then, sprinkle the squares of construction paper over the top of the plate. Lightly press the paper into the glue to secure it in place. After that, all that’s left to do is allow the glue to dry!
