Taco Paper Plate Craft

This quick and easy paper plate craft is so simple to make, which means it’s perfect for a rainy spring afternoon or a hot summer day! And since it’s so easy, all your kids can get in on the fun, no matter their age.

The short list of supplies needed to put this easy art project together is the best part about this taco craft for kids! But it’s also super easy to customize, so don’t forget to keep scrolling to the bottom of the post to get more ideas for making this project with your kids.

• Paper plates. To make your tacos at home, you can use any size paper plate you want. We used small 6-inch plates because that’s what we had on hand, but full-sized plates would also work!
• Light brown paint. To turn your plate into a taco shell, you’ll need to use some light brown paint. If you don’t have the right tint, just add some white paint to dark brown paint and mix until you reach your desired shade.
• Construction paper. We used brown (meat), yellow (cheese), green (lettuce), and red (tomatoes) construction paper to make the filling for our tacos. But if you don’t have any on hand, scroll to the bottom of the post to get more ideas for your own filling.
• Scissors. To create the filling for your taco, you’ll also need some scissors to cut the paper into strips.

How to Make a Paper Plate Taco

Now that you have all your supplies gathered up, it’s time to get crafty! Have some fun with your kids making your own craft at home or in the classroom.

The first step to making your paper plate taco is to paint the paper plate. We used light brown paint to give it a taco shell look. If you don’t have the right shade, just try mixing the paint you have together until you get a light brown or tan tint.

Paint the entire plate brown, making sure all the white from the plate is fully covered. It took us two coats of paint to cover the plate.

While you’re waiting for the paint to dry on your plates, your kids can cut the construction paper into strips. For each taco, we used:

• Brown construction paper for the ground beef
• Yellow construction paper for the cheese
• Green construction paper for the lettuce
• Red construction paper for the tomatoes

We cut the strips around 1/4 inch thick and used four strips of each color to fill the tacos.

When the paint is completely dry, fold the plate in half to form a taco shell shape.

Then, open the plate up and put a small amount of glue in the center. Arrange your brown paper strips on top of the glue and hold them in place for a few seconds.

After that, add some more glue to the center of the plate and place the yellow strips of paper on top.

Next, add some more glue and press the green strips of paper in place.

Finish filling your taco with some red strips of paper at the top of the shell.

Once you have all the filling ingredients added to the center of the taco, add some more glue over the top of all the strips of paper. Fold the top half of the plate over the top of the filling and press it in place while the glue dries.

Finish by trimming the strips of paper around the edge of the plate with your scissors.

• Fill it with tissue paper. In addition to construction paper, you can also use tissue paper to make the filling for your tacos. You’ll need to same colors of tissue paper as construction paper.
• Cut the filling into the correct shapes. This simple craft was designed to be easy enough for preschoolers to make on their own. But if you’re working with older kids, you can help them practice their cutting skills by asking them to cut the different layers of ingredients into their correct shapes before adding them to the center of the taco.
