You’re going to love how quick and easy these sugar cookies come together. And since the bake quickly too, you can enjoy a sweet holiday treat in just a few minutes!

The first step to making these easy cookies is to prepare the dry ingredients. Add the gluten free flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt to a large bowl. Next, grab another large bowl and add the sugar, butter, and cream cheese. Make sure to start with softened butter and softened cream cheese to make mixing the ingredients either. You can set the butter and cream cheese on the counter one hour before you plan to start baking to help both ingredients soften naturally. Or heat them in the microwave for 10 to 20 seconds to soften each of the ingredients. Just make sure not to overheat the butter or cream cheese or it will melt!

Once you have your ingredients softened and ready to go, use a hand mixer or stand mixer to cream all three ingredients together. Continue beating the ingredients until they’re light and and fluffy.

Use a small cookie scoop or tablespoon to scoop the dough and roll it into a ball between your hands. The dough will be sticky, so I suggest spraying your hands with a little bit of nonstick cooking spray to keep the dough from sticking while you roll. Place the dough balls on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.

After rolling the dough into balls, use the back of the cookie scoop to flatten out each ball. Then, you can decorate your cookies with sprinkles if you want. Just add a few sprinkles to the top of each cookie and lightly press them into place.

Place your cookies in the preheated oven and bake them for 10 to 12 minutes, until the edges are just beginning to brown. At this point, the center of your cookies will be soft. Allow the cookies to cool on the baking sheet for around five minutes to help the centers firm up, then you can transfer them to a wire cooling rack to cool completely.

You’re going to love how simple these cookies are to make! And with these decorating ideas, you’ll have so much fun creating delicious treats for all of your holiday get-togethers.

    • Top with icing. Instead of decorating your cookies with Christmas sprinkles, you can also spread a layer of icing on top of each one. Just leave off the sprinkles when baking your cookies. Then, allow the cookies to cool completely and top with your favorite frosting flavor.
    • Roll them in sprinkles. Adding a few sprinkles to the top of each cookie is a simple way to decorate your holiday treats. But if you want even more color, try rolling the balls in sprinkles before placing them on the baking sheet. Then, flatten the cookies and pop them in the oven!
    • Make cookie sandwiches. Since these are soft and chewy sugar cookies, they’re perfect for cookie sandwiches. Spread a layer of icing on the bottom of one cookie, then place another cookie on top.

How Do You Make Gluten Free Cookies Moist?

Since gluten free flour is drier than traditional all-purpose flour, finding ways to make moist gluten free cookies can be difficult! The addition of cream cheese in this sugar cookie recipe helps keep your sugar cookie dough from becoming too dry and crumbly.

How Do You Make Gluten Free Cookies Stick Together?

The dryness of gluten free flour can make it hard to create the right consistency in your homemade cookie dough. If your gluten free cookie dough keeps falling apart when you’re trying to roll your dough balls, there are a couple things you can do:

    • Increase the moisture. One of the simplest ways to fix dry cookie dough is to add a little moisture to the bowl. You can add a small amount of water or milk, around 1/2 tablespoon at a time, until the dough begins to stick together. Or try increasing the fat content slightly by mixing in more butter or oil 1/2 tablespoon at a time.
    • Chill the dough. Another way to help your cookie dough come together more easily is to place the dough in the fridge. While this sugar cookie dough doesn’t require chilling, it can help if the dough is too soft. Cover the bowl and chill your dough for at least one hour, then try rolling it into balls.

Why are My Gluten Free Sugar Cookies Falling Apart?

Making gluten free cookies isn’t always easy. That’s because gluten free flour is so dry. The dryness often causes the cookie dough or the baked cookies to fall apart. There are a few reasons why your sugar cookies may be falling apart:

    • The dough is too dry. Dry cookie dough is the biggest reason sugar cookies fall apart after baking. Your sugar cookie dough should be soft and pliable, not dry and crumbly. If your dough looks too dry, add a small amount of water, milk, or melted butter to the bowl 1/2 tablespoon at a time until the dough comes together easily.
    • You undercooked the cookies. Finding the right bake time for your sugar cookies can be difficult. That’s because each oven has it’s own quirks. Instead of watching the time, try looking at your cookies to determine if they’re done. While you want the very center of the cookies to be soft when you pull the pan out of the oven, the edges should be golden brown. If the edges are still soft, allow the cookies to continue baking.
    • You overcooked the cookies. Overcooking your cookies is another reason they could be falling apart. Cooking the cookies for too long will cause the cookies to release moisture, making them dry and crumbly. Remember to take the cookies out of the oven when the edges are golden brown but the center is still soft.

    1. Can you make these as cookie bars rather than individual cookies? If so, are there any adjustments that should be made other than baking time?

      1. I haven’t tried to make them as a cookie bar. The cookies are fairly soft after baking, so I’m not sure how well they would hold up in bar form. If you try it, I’d love to hear how they turn out!

    2. These look delicious! I’m fairly new to gluten free baking. Could I use almond flour in place of the gf flour in this recipe?

      1. Almond flour and gluten free all purpose flour aren’t interchangeable because almond flour is much more dense than regular flour. So I don’t think you can swap them out in this recipe

    3. made these according to the recipe and froze ahead of time and they were too mushy to serve, had to be tossed out.

      1. I’m so sorry that happened! I’ve never tried freezing them before, so I wasn’t sure what would happen once they thawed.
