What are Kitchen Sink Cookies?

If you’ve never heard of kitchen sink cookies, you’re in for a treat. These popular cookies are sold at Panera, but they’re also a classic homemade recipe, too. They get their name because they’re filled with everything but the kitchen sink!

Typically, kitcken sink cookies are made with a chocolate chip cookie base, then other ingredients are mixed into the dough before baking. Most kitchen sink cookies are made with chocolate chips, pretzel pieces, and caramel.

To turn the popular recipe into Christmas kitchen sink cookies, I added some holiday M&Ms and butterscotch chips to the mix!

To prepare the cookie dough, start by whisking together your dry ingredients in a medium bowl. Add the gluten free flour, cornstarch, baking soda, and salt to the bowl, then stir the ingredients until they’re well combined.

When it comes to learning how to make gluten free cookies, I have found that not any flour will do. I’ve tried several different brands of gluten free flours and I have found the best one is  Bob’s Red Mill 1-for-1 Gluten Free Baking flour by far!

Set the bowl of dry ingredients aside and grab another large bowl. Beat together the butter, brown sugar, and white sugar until the mixture is light and fluffy.

Then, add the eggs and vanilla extract. Beat all the ingredients together until the eggs are blended well into the butter mixture.

Add the gluten free flour mixture to the bowl and beat to combine. The dough will be thick, so if you’re having trouble blending the flour into the dough with your hand mixer, just use a wooden spoon to finish mixing the dough.

Once the dough is blended, it’s time to add in all the kitchen sink ingredients! Add the butterscotch chips, chocolate chips, M&Ms, toffee bits (I used Heath bits), and gluten free pretzels to the dough. Before adding the pretzels, break them up into smaller pieces to make mixing the dough easier.

I used Glutino gluten free pretzels for these cookies and they were delicious!

After stirring in all of your sweet and salty mixins, its time to start baking! Use a cookie scoop or tablespoon to scoop out the dough. Roll the dough between your hands to form a ball, then place the dough on a parchment paper lined baking sheet.

Bake the cookies for 8 to 10 minutes, until the edges of the cookies are golden brown but the centers are still slightly soft.

Allow the cookies to cool for around five minutes on the baking sheet to give the centers a chance to firm up. After that, you can transfer them to a wire cooling rack to cool completely before eating.

What is the best gluten free flour to use for cookies?

I’ve tried a variety of gluten free flours when baking and I have found the best one is Bob’s Red Mill 1-to-1 Baking Flour by far!

How do I know when to take the gluten free cookies out of the oven?

If you want a nice, chewy Christmas cookie, it’s best to remove the cookies from the oven when the centers are still soft. After that, just let the cookies rest on the pan to continue cooking. When the center is firm, that’s when you remove them from the pan and place them on a wire rack to finish cooling.

Should I flatten the kitchen sink cookies before baking?

These cookies spread a ton on their own, so there’s no reason to flatten the balls before you put the pan in the oven. Keeping them in a ball shape will help keep the center of the cookies from overbaking.

Can I add other ingredients to the Christmas cookies?

That’s the beauty of this delicious recipe, you can add any mix-ins you want! Here are a few ideas that would be delicious additions to your Christmas cookies:

  • Potato chips
  • Caramel bits
  • White chocolate chips
  • Mint chips
  • Mini M&Ms
  • Chopped chocolate covered pretzels
  • Peanut butter chips
