Popcorn Witch Hands
To make these fun popcorn witch treats, you’ll start by making a caramel coating. Then, you can fill up your plastic gloves to create spooky witch hands.
To make this easy recipe for popcorn witch hands, you’ll need:
- Popped popcorn
- Butter
- Brown sugar
- Corn syrup
- Salt
- Vanilla extract
- Baking soda
- Green food coloring
- Candy corn
In addition to the ingredients to prepare the Halloween caramel corn, you’ll also need a couple of craft supplies to finish creating your witch hand snacks, including:
Food prep gloves. To ensure all the popcorn pieces fit down into the fingers of your gloves, I suggest using large food prep gloves for these treats. Avoid any type of gloves that say they’re made with latex. In addition to causing an allergic reaction in some people, most latex gloves have a powder coating on them that could get onto the popcorn.
Ribbon. I used green ribbon to tie the top of the gloves closed, but you can use any color you want. You could even use Halloween ribbon or some plain twine to close up the bags.
How to Make Halloween Caramel Corn
You won’t believe how easy it is to make your own caramel corn at home. And once you try a bite of fresh caramel corn, you’ll never want to eat the premade stuff again! Just follow these instructions for preparing your witch popcorn treats.
Start by combining the butter, corn syrup, and brown sugar in a large saucepan. Cook the ingredients over medium heat until the butter is melted and the sugar is fully combined. Make sure to stir constantly at this point to keep the sugar and corn syrup from burning.
Once the butter is melted, allow the mixture to come to a boil. Continue boiling the caramel sauce for around five minutes, stirring occasionally to mix everything up.
After the mixture has had time to boil, remove it from the heat and stir in the green food coloring and vanilla extract. I suggest using gel food coloring for this recipe because it adds a brighter color without adding too much liquid to the sauce. Add a few drops of food coloring at a time and stir between each addition until you get your desired shade of green.
Next, add the baking soda to the pan and stir to mix. The mixture will start fizzing and bubbling, which means the baking soda is working. Once the baking soda is fully mixed into the sauce, it’s ready to be added to the popcorn.
Now that your caramel sauce is ready to go, all that’s left to do is pour it over the popcorn. I suggest adding the popcorn to a bowl that’s twice as big as the amount of popcorn you have. That will give you plenty of space to stir the sauce onto the popcorn.
What kind of popcorn is best for caramel corn?
I used air popped popcorn with yellow popcorn kernels to make this recipe. I didn’t add any salt or other toppings to the popcorn after it was finished popping so the caramel sauce add all the flavor.
You could also use microwave popcorn if you don’t have an air popper. Just make sure to choose a variety without any added flavoring (like butter) and one that is only lightly salted.
After all the popcorn is coated in the green caramel sauce, spread it in an even layer over a parchment paper lined baking sheet. Bake the popcorn at 250 degrees for around 45 minutes, until the caramel sauce has hardened. This will make the caramel crunchy and not sticky when you bite into it.
When the cook time is up, remove the pan from the oven and allow the popcorn to cool to room temperature before making your popcorn witches hands.
How to Make Popcorn Witch Hands
Now that you have your popcorn ready to go, all that’s left to do is assemble your popcorn witch hands! So, grab your candy corn and plastic gloves and let’s get crafting.
Star by making your witch fingernails by adding one piece of candy corn to the tip of each finger in your glove. In addition to candy corn, you could also use M&Ms, skittles, almonds, or white chocolate chips.
Then, carefully push the cooled carmel corn into each finger of your glove. You may need to break some pieces apart for them to fit down the fingers. Once all the fingers are filled, add enough caramel corn to the center of the hand to fill it up.
The last step is to tie a bow at the top of your witch hand. Gather the top of the glove up into a bunch and twist it to secure it in place. Then, tie a piece of ribbon around the top to secure it. I used green ribbon to match the popcorn, but you can use any color or design you want for your own popcorn witches hands!
Once you have all your witch hands filled up and decorated, all that’s left to do is pass them out to the kids! These fun treats are perfect for Halloween parties at school, trick or treat snacks, or favors for your guests at your Hocus Pocus or witch themed party.
