And while this taco dip looks amazing, it’s actually super simple to make. That’s partly because you can whip it up with just a handful of ingredients! To make your own football field dip, you’ll need:

  • Cream cheese: To create a thick and creamy base for your cold taco dip, cream cheese is a must. Start with softened cream cheese so it’s easy to spread, then chill the dip to allow it to harden before serving.
  • Sour cream: You can’t have taco dip without sour cream! Add some tanginess to your cold taco dip with the help of sour cream.
  • Taco seasoning: Give your football dip the taste of tacos with the help of some taco seasoning. You can use store-bought taco seasoning or make your own.
  • Salsa: You can use any type of salsa you prefer for this layer of your taco dip. I find that smooth, restaurant style salsa works best for layering. But if you only have chunky salsa on hand, it’s fine!
  • Green onion: Add some fresh flavor to your cold dip with the help of some finely chopped green onions. You just need a couple onions to take the flavor over the top!
  • Shredded cheese: Just like a real taco, this taco dip is topped with shredded cheese. For this recipe, I used cheddar cheese, but taco blend cheese would also taste amazing!
  • Shredded lettuce: Finish making your game day dip by decorating the top of the dip with chopped lettuce to create the football field.
  • Red and orange peppers (optional): Add some football players to the top of your dip with a couple of bell peppers for decoration.

How to Make Football Field Taco Dip

Now that you have all your ingredients gathered up, it’s time to start layering. Follow these easy instructions for turning your cold taco dip into a football field for game day.

The first step is to create the base layer of the dip. Combine the softened cream cheese, sour cream, and taco seasoning in a bowl. Stir to thoroughly mix the ingredients.

After the ingredients are well combined, spread the mixture over the top of a large rectangular serving plate. Once the cream cheese mixture is evenly spread, cover the plate with plastic wrap and chill the cream cheese for at least one hour. This step will make it easier to build your dip and ensure that the cream cheese has stiffened.

After you have given the cream cheese time to chill, you can start to build your taco dip football field. I suggest waiting until you’re ready to serve the dip to put it together. That will ensure all the ingredients stay fresh and don’t get soggy. Don’t worry! You’ll only need a few minutes to finish making this dip!

Start by spreading a layer of salsa over the top of the cream cheese mixture. You want this layer to be fairly thin to keep it from dripping over the edges of your cream cheese as the dip sits. Then, top the salsa with your finely chopped green onion.

Top the salsa layer with a layer of shredded cheese. Spread the cheese evenly over the top of the salsa until the salsa is fully covered.

After that, add the chopped lettuce to the top of the dip. But only in the center of the platter! Spread the lettuce over the top, leaving around an inch on each end to make the end zones of your football field.

After that, transfer some extra sour cream into a piping bag and cut the top off the bag. Pipe the sour cream over the top of the lettuce layer to create the yard lines for your football field.

Finish decorating your taco dip by adding your pepper football players to the top. I cut small squares from orange and red bell peppers, then place them on top of the dip.

There are a few different options you can use when making your “football players” to place on top of the dip, including:

  • Sliced jalapeno peppers
  • Cherry tomatoes
  • Black olives
  • Chopped tomatoes
  • Avocado chunks

What Can I Serve with Football Taco Dip?

Now that you have your taco appetizer is ready to go, you’re probably wondering what to serve with it. These options are a great choice:

  • Tortilla or corn chips
  • Cool Ranch or Nacho Cheese Doritos
  • Crackers
  • Veggies, like carrot sticks, mini bell peppers, or celery

Taco Dip Storage and Serving

How Long Can Taco Dip Sit Out? Since this dip is made with cream cheese, the longest I would recommend letting this dip sit out is two hours. After that, it’s a good idea to refrigerate the dip until you’re ready to eat it again. Before placing the dip in the refrigerator, be sure to cover it with plastic wrap to keep the cream cheese from hardening.

How Long Can I Keep Taco Dip in the Fridge? If you cover your dip and keep it refrigerated, it will stay good for up to two days. After that, the lettuce will probably start to wilt and get soggy.

Can I Make Football Field Taco Dip Ahead of Time? Since this dip is topped with lettuce, I wouldn’t suggest layering it ahead of time. The lettuce will immediately start to wilt once it’s added to the dip. You can make the cream cheese layer ahead of time and keep it refrigerated for up to four days. Just add the toppings right before you’re ready to serve it!
