Forget using a boxed mix with that make dry and brittle waffles and try my easy recipe for gluten free waffles instead! These delicious gluten free Belgian waffles are so light and fluffy, you’d never guess they were a gluten free recipe.

And the best part is that they’re so delicious, you’d never guess they were sans gluten! They’re definitely one of my favorite easy gluten free recipe!

But what I really love about these delicious waffles is that they’re so simple to make. You won’t need any special flour mixes or strange ingredients to make these yummy waffles! Just gluten free baking flour, and a handful of traditional baking supplies make up the ingredient list for these simple gluten free Belgian Waffles.

How to Make Gluten Free Belgian Waffles

To make this easy gluten free waffles recipe, you’ll only need a few simple ingredients:

  • Gluten free baking flour
  • Sugar
  • Baking soda
  • Salt
  • Milk
  • Eggs
  • Butter

After reading that list of ingredients, I bet you’re ready to whip up these fluffy waffles so you can enjoy them for breakfast, right? The first step to making these easy gluten free waffles is to mix the dry ingredients together. So, add the gluten free baking flour (I love Bob’s Red Mill 1-to-1 gluten free baking flour) along with the sugar, baking soda, and salt to a large bowl. Whisk the ingredients together until they’re well combined.

In a separate bowl, add your milk and eggs. Whisk those two ingredients until they’re combined.

Then, add your melted butter. Before your pour the butter into the bowl, make sure it has cooled slightly. If your butter is too hot when you add it with the milk and eggs, it could begin to scramble the eggs before you can start cooking your waffles. When the butter is still melted, but warm to the touch, you can add them to the bowl.

After mixing your butter into your milk and egg mixture, create a well in the center of the dry ingredients. Pour the egg mixture in and mix until just combined. Your batter will be lumpy and slightly thicker than traditional waffle batter.

Since this gluten free waffle batter is slightly thicker than traditional waffle batter, you’ll need to cover almost the entire waffle iron with batter. It doesn’t spread the same way traditional waffles would.

Grease both the top and bottom of the waffle maker with nonstick cooking spray to keep your waffles from sticking, then add the batter to the waffle maker. You’ll need a heaping 1/3 cup of batter for a large Belgian waffle maker. Start in the center and spread the batter throughout the waffle maker until it’s almost covered.

Close the lid on the waffle maker and allow the gluten free waffles to cook for five to seven minutes. You’ll know the waffles are done cooking with the waffle maker stops steaming. Try to avoid lifting the lid before the waffles are finished cooking or you may rip your waffles.

I’ve tried a variety of gluten free flours when baking and cooking, and I have found the best one is Bob’s Red Mill 1-to-1 Baking Flour by far!

How do I know when to take the gluten free waffles off the waffle iron?

Since the waffles are covered as they’re cooking, it can be hard to tell when your gluten free Belgian waffles are finished cooking. The typical rule of thumb is that the waffles are done when they stop steaming. Keep an eye on the clock (cook for five to seven minutes) and the waffle iron. When you stop seeing steam come out of the iron, it’s safe to open the lid.

Can I mix in other ingredients?

Since this is a basic waffle recipe, the possiblities are endless when it comes to mix-ins! Here are a few fun ideas for different gluten free waffle flavors:

  • Sweet add-ins, like chocolate chips or white chocolate
  • Fruit, like blueberries or chopped strawberries
  • Tropical flavors, like crushed pineapple or coconut
  • Savory options, like shredded cheese or garlic and herbs

When adding other ingreidents to the waffle batter, I suggest using around 1/2 cup total of add-ins to prevent your batter from getting too lumpy with the added ingredients.

What can I put on top of my gluten free waffles?

In addition to mixing in flavors to the batter, you can also top your gluten free waffles with a variety of delicious ingredients. Try topping your waffles with some of these fun toppings:

  • Maple syrup and butter
  • Whipped cream
  • Fresh berries
  • Pineapple and coconut
  • Strawberry syrup or jam
  • Chocolate chips
  • Chocolate syrup
  • Ice cream

Gluten Free Belgian Waffles

Cook Time: 20 minutes
Total Time: 30 minutes

This recipe for gluten free waffles is delicious. The waffles are light and fluffy, making them perfect for a gluten free breakfast.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups gluten free baking flour
  • ¼ cup sugar
  • 4 teaspoons baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 ½ cups milk
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 6 tablespoons butter, melted and cooled slightly

Instructions

  1. Preheat the waffle iron.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together the gluten free baking flour, sugar, baking soda and salt. Set aside.
  3. In a separate bowl, beat together the milk and eggs. Add the vanilla extract and melted butter and mix to combine.
  4. Make a well in the dry ingredients and add the wet ingredients to the bowl. Use a spoon to stir the ingredients together, being careful not to over mix. The batter will be lumpy.
  5. When the waffle iron is heated, spray the top and bottom with nonstick cooking spray. Spread the batter over the bottom of the waffle iron, starting in the center and working your way out until the plate is 2/3 of the way covered.
  6. Close the lid and cook the waffle for 5 to 7 minutes. The waffle is ready when the iron stops steaming.
  7. Continue cooking until all the batter has been used.

  2. I followed this recipe to a T and it destroyed my waffle iron. The batter disintegrated and just burned in the 5-7 minutes. I opened up the waffle maker to nothing. My house smells terrible now and I wasted all of the ingredients. Not sure why this happened if it worked for this other person who posted.

    1. I’m sorry this happened, Krystle! I don’t know what could have gone wrong! I’ve made this recipe a couple different times without issue. The batter should be pretty thick, so I’m not sure why it would have disintegrated while cooking. Maybe the waffle iron was too hot? Or there wasn’t enough batter on the iron?
