This craft is super simple to put together, making it perfect for kids of any age! To make your own popsicle stick heart craft, you’ll need a few kid’s craft supplies, including:

  • Large popsicle sticks: The size of your hearts for your garland will depend on the size of the popsicle sticks you use. You can even use a variety of dfferent sizes to create a unique decoration for Valentine’s Day.
  • Sharp scissors: While this craft is easy to make with kids, there is one step that an adult should do. To cut the popsicle sticks, you will need to use a pair of sharp scissors.
  • Glue: I found that hot glue is the easiest way to get your popsicle sticks to stick together. But if you’re making this craft with younger kids, you can also use plain white glue. Just make sure to give the glue plenty of time to dry before painting your hearts.
  • Paint: Although you don’t have to paint your hearts, using pink and red paint is a great way to add some Valentine’s Day charm to your craft. I suggest using acrylic craft paint for the best results when painting popsicle sticks.
  • String: To turn your popsicle stick hearts into a garland, you will also need some string or twine. I found this cute pink twine at Dollar Tree in the Valentine’s Day section.

Now that you know what you’ll need, gather up your supplies and get started on your own heart craft right now!

Before your kids can start making their own popsicle stick hearts, you will need to help them with the first step of the craft. To make a heart out of popsicle sticks, start by cutting the end off each stick.

Cut each piece around one inch long. You will need both ends of the popsicle sticks to make one heart.

After cutting the ends off each stick, you may need to use a piece of sandpaper to smooth the ends of each piece.

Once you have all your popsicle stick pieces cut, your kids can start making their own wooden hearts. To turn the popsicle stick pieces into a heart, place one stick on top of another stick, lining up each end of the stick to the side of the other stick. Use glue to secure the two pieces together.

Make sure the glue on your popsicle sticks is completely dry, then you can start painting your hearts to create a Valentine’s Day garland. We used red and pink acrylic paint to paint each heart, giving each piece two coats of paint.

Hang it on the mantle. One of my favorite places to use a garland is on my mantle. Measure the length of your mantle, then cut enough popsicle sticks for your kids to make plenty of hearts to fill the space. After putting your garland together, hang it up as part of your holiday display.

Add it to a wreath. Use your popsicle stick garland to decorate a wreath for your front door. Add your garland to the front of your holiday wreath to give it a rustic look.

Use the hearts as filler. Instead of making a garland with your popsicle stick hearts, why not use them as decorative filler instead? The wooden hearts would look adorable in a mason jar or bowl as part of your farmhouse Valentine’s Day decor.
