Since this LEGO cake is so easy to make, you only need a few supplies to prepare them. To make your own cake decorated with chocolate building bricks, you’ll need:

  • Cake and icing. The most important part of this classic birthday treat is the cake itself. But I have some good news for you — there’s no special recipe you need to make it! You can use any flavor of cake and any type of icing you want. So, whip up your cake however you want — I used a boxed chocolate cake mix and made my own chocolate icing. Or you could just grab a plain cake from the grocery store and add your own LEGO decorations to it.
  • LEGO brick candy mold. The key to turning a plain and boring birthday cake into a cute LEGO cake is the chocolate bricks. And that means you’re going to need one special tool to create your own LEGO cake decorations — a candy mold. This LEGO candy mold set is perfect for decorating your cake, cupcakes, or even creating some cute candy for your party, too!
  • Colored melting chocolate. Once you have your molds ready, you’ll also need some melting chocolate. You can grab yours at the link listed above or check out the party section at Wal-Mart to find melting chocolate there. I grabbed several different primary colors to decorate my cake, including red, blue, orange, and yellow.
  • Rainbow sprinkles. Add a pop of color to the top of your cake with the help of some rainbow sprinkles.
  • LEGO candles. The final touch on the top of your LEGO birthday cake is the candles! Luckily, you can grab some Betty Crocker candles that look just like LEGO bricks at Wal-Mart or on Amazon.

How to Make a Lego Cake

Now that you have all your supplies gathered up, it’s time to start baking! First, prepare your cake and frosting. It doesn’t matter what flavor of cake you use. My birthday boy requested a “big chocolate cake,” so that’s what I made!

Once your cake is ready to go, you can start decorating! But before you can add the LEGO candy to your cake, you have to make them. Luckily, it’s so simple to prepare these colorful chocolate bricks.

You’ll have to prepare each color of your LEGO bricks separately. Pour your first color of melting chocolate into a microwave safe bowl and melt them according to the package instructions.

When the chocolate is fully melted, carefully spoon it into the silicone candy mold. To ensure the chocolate goes down into each small circle on the top of the LEGO candy, try using a toothpick to push the chocolate into each hole. Then, fill the mold to the top.

Give the mold a light shake to help even out the melted chocolate, then place it on a flat surface to set. You can speed up the setting process by placing the mold in the refrigerator.

Once one color is fully hardened, carefully pop it out of the mold and wash the mold, if needed. If you wash the candy mold, make sure it is completely dry before adding more melted chocolate. Leftover water can cause the candy to discolor as it hardens.

How to Decorate a LEGO Cake

Now that the you have all your chocolate LEGO bricks ready to go, you can start decorating your cake!

Use your chocolate LEGO bricks to decorate around the bottom of the cake. Simply press the bricks into the icing to secure them in place. You can create a couple of rows of bricks around the bottom of the cake or cover the entire side of the cake with the bricks, if you want.

Then, top the cake with your rainbow sprinkles to add even more color to your birthday dessert.

After that, the only thing left to do is press the candles on top! We used LEGO brick candles, along with a number 4 candle, to celebrate my son’s fourth birthday.

  1. How many packets of melting chocolate did you use to cover the cake with blocks like you did ?
    Thanks.

    1. I used one full package of the melting chocolates in each color. But don’t think I ended up using all the chocolates on the cake, so you probably wouldn’t even need a full package of each color.
