This simple theme is great for throwing a birthday party at home! And when you throw a birthday party, you’re going to need great video game party food! These easy controller cookies won’t disappoint.

Throwing a video game home party is one of the easiest parties I’ve put together for my kids. But one of the most difficult parts was coming up with the perfect video game party food ideas.

Video Game Controller Cookies
When searching for inspiration for our video game birthday party on Pinterest, I found tons of adorable cookie ideas. But since I’m not a great cookie decorator, I knew there was no way I would be able to create video game controller cookies that looked as amazing as the ones I saw online.
So instead of trying to make a detailed video game controller cookie for my son’s party, I decided to come up with a simpler alternative. If you’re like me and want to make your own food for your video game party but you don’t have professional cookie decorating skills, I’m here to help!
These adorable video game inspired cookies are not only easy to make, but they’re also delicious. And they were a big hit with all the party goers because they look just like buttons on a video game controller!
Easy Video Game Party Food
So now that I have you convinced that you need to make this simple food idea for a video game party, you’re probably wondering how to make them, right?
The first step to putting these cute video game controller cookies together is to make your favorite sugar cookies. When I’m making sugar cookies, my go-to recipe is always this one from Better Homes and Gardens. They’re so easy to make and always come out perfectly.
After you have made your sugar cookie dough, roll the dough until it’s around 1/4 inch thick. Use a small round cookie cutter (mine was 2 1/2 inch) to cut out your cookies. Continue rolling and cutting until all the dough has been used, then bake the cookies according to the package instructions.
Allow the cookies to cool completely before decorating them.
Decorating Video Game Controller Cookies
While your cookies are cooling, take the time to make your icing. You could make things super simple on yourself and use premade icing for this step. To ice my video game controller cookies, I made my own buttercream icing using this recipe from Better Homes and Gardens.
I started by separating around 1 cup of the prepared icing evenly into four small bowls. Then, I added food coloring to the bowls to create orange, red, green, and blue icing. Set those bowls aside while you prepare the chocolate icing for the tops of the cookies.
To turn traditional buttercream into chocolate buttercream, you’ll need to add some cocoa powder to your icing. I added 1/4 cup cocoa powder to the remaining buttercream icing, then added an additional tablespoon of milk to thin the icing enough for spreading.
Spread the chocolate icing over the top of each cookie, then add the colored icing to piping bags and pipe the button designs on each cookie, like this:
- Green triangles
- Red squares
- Blue Xs
- Orange circles

These adorable controller cookies made a great addition to my other video game party food. And they were so much simpler to make than detailed video game controllers.
The other food for a video game party we served was chocolate cake and chocolate covered pretzels. But these cute controller button cookies were the star of the show!
