What better way to decorate your home this summer than with a few mason jar crafts? These simple DIY projects are a great way to decorate your home for any occasion — especially during the summer! Whether you’re hosting a summer party or just want to add some red, white, and blue to your home decor, creating patriotic mason jars is a great idea! And the best part about this easy project is that you only need a mason jar and three other craft supplies to make it!

My favorite part about this easy farmhouse craft is that you can get the supplies you need at Dollar General (or even Dollar Tree). That means it’s not only simple to make, but also super cheap!

DIY Patriotic Mason Jars

To make your own patriotic mason jars, you’ll need just a few simple supplies. I found everything I needed to put this craft together at Dollar General and Dollar Tree.

Here’s what you’ll need to make your own red, white, and blue mason jars:

• Paper napkins: To quickly and easily add a patriotic look to your mason jars, use paper napkins! I found these adorable truck napkins at Dollar General for just $1!
• Paint: To make the rest of the jar match the background of the patriotic napkins, I used white chalk paint to coat the outside of the jar. You can use any paint color you want to match the design on your napkins.
• Mason jars: The size of the design will help you determine what size of jar you need for this patriotic craft. Since the napkins I used were pretty large, I decided a quart jar would be the best option.
• Mod Podge: The key to getting your napkin to stick to the jar is Mod Podge. You can find this handy craft glue pretty much anywhere — even the craft aisle at Dollar Tree!
• Ribbon: While this craft supply is essential to the project, tying a bow around the top of the jar adds a nice finishing touch to the craft. I got my polka dot burlap ribbon at Dollar Tree.
• Jar filler: After you finish decorating your patriotic mason jars, you can fill them with whatever you want. I added some fun flag-inspired flowers from Dollar Tree to my jar, but keep reading to see some other fun ideas you could use to fill your finished 4th of July mason jars.

How to Make Napkin Decoupage Mason Jars

Once you see how simple it is to decorate your mason jars with paper napkins, you’re going to want to make a new jar for every occasion! This easy farmhouse craft is one my favorite ways to give plain glass jars a festive look for any holiday.

Before you can glue the napkin to the jar, I suggest giving the glass a few coats of paint. This will help the napkin blend more naturally with the jar, making it look like the napkin’s design is painted on.

I used chalk paint to decorate the outside of my mason jar. But you can use a variety of paints to add color to your glass. Learn how to paint mason jars to get the best finish on your DIY project.

While the paint dries on your jar, you can start getting your napkin ready. Aren’t these patriotic truck napkins from Dollar General so cute? If you can’t find these at your store, try checking the seasonal section of Dollar Tree or Wal-Mart to find some fun patriotic napkins for your project instead.

Once you’ve found a cute 4th of July design to add to your jars, you’ll need to do a little bit of work to your napkins to get them ready for decoupage. First, carefully pull the top layer of the napkin (with the design on it) away from the remaining layers.

These napkins were two-ply napkins, meaning they were made up of just two layers. Some higher quality napkins are three-ply, which means you’ll need to remove two layers from the back of the layer with the design.

After separating the design from the other napkin layers, carefully cut out the section of the napkin you want to use on your jar. Since I liked the stars surrounding the truck, I just cut the top square off the napkin, then trimmed it to fit on the jar.

Next, brush a thick layer of Mod Podge over the area of the jar where you want your napkin to stick. Then, carefully lay the napkin on top of the glue and lightly press it into place. As you’re pressing, move the napkin around slowly to help remove wrinkles and air bubbles.

You’ll need to work carefully during this step because the napkin can easily rip!

Now that you have the napkin in the spot you want it to go, allow the Mod Podge underneath to dry. Then, brush a thin layer of Mod Podge over the top of the napkin to finish the decoupage process. After the first layer of Mod Podge dries completely, you can add one more layer to fully seal the jar.

Give your decouapge mason jar plenty of time to dry. I suggest letting it sit overnight. Then, you can decorate the top of the jar with some ribbon if you want. I found this cute burlap ribbon at Dollar Tree and knew it would be perfect for this patriotic craft!

Patriotic Mason Jar Decorating Ideas

Now that your patriotic mason jars are finished, you’re going to need find ways to use them around your house! With the help of these decorating ideas, you’ll have plenty of inspiration to add a rustic touch to your home this summer.

Now that your jars are decorated, you can finish craft by adding accents to it to decorate your dining room table or the table at your next summer party. Try adding these elements to your patriotic jars to display them:

• Flowers: My favorite thing to add to a decorated jar is flowers. Use red, white, and blue faux flowers to give your centerpiece a more patriotic look. Or make the most of the summer weather and cut some fresh flowers to add to your mason jars.
• Patriotic sprays: Instead of flowers, give your centerpiece a festive look with patriotic sprays. You can stick some shiny metallic or sparkly glitter sprays into your centerpiece to add some holiday fun to your table display.
• Tableware: Make your decorated mason jars do double duty by using the jars to hold the tableware at all your summer parties. You can place silverware, napkins, and straws in the jars and tray to create a cute display for all your party necessities.
• Fireworks: Use your patriotic mason jars to hold your 4th of July party supplies, like fireworks. The jars are the perfect place to hold sparklers, firecrackers, and poppers for your party.
