Dollar Tree DIY 4th of July Candles

Finding simple and cheap ways to decorate your parties for the holidays is a must! And there’s no better place than the dollar store to find cheap supplies for all your holiday craft projects! These 4th of July candles use Dollar Tree supplies and a free patriotic SVG to create a beautiful decoration for your home or 4th of July party.

The best part about making these red, white, and blue candle holders is that I found the glass holders and star-shaped votives at Dollar Tree. That means this craft is not only simple to make, but also super cheap!

DIY 4th of July Candles

To make your own 4th of July candle holders, you’ll need a few supplies. I found some of the items at the dollar store and had a few things at home already.

Here’s what you’ll need to make your own red, white, and blue candles:

• Glass candle holders: To hold your candles, you’re going to need some candle holders. I found these small votive candle holders at Dollar Tree in the craft aisle and they were perfect. But you can also find candle holders similar to these at craft stores, like Hobby Lobby, or in the craft aisle at Wal-Mart.
• Red and blue vinyl: Add the patriotic phrases to the front of your candle holders using everyday vinyl. I used red and blue for this project, but you can use any colors you want to decorate your candle holders.
• Patriotic SVG : Keep scrolling to see how to get your free SVG file to make your own candle holders at home.
• Cricut: To cut the words for your 4th of July decor, you’ll need a cutting machine to cut the vinyl. I use the Cricut Explore Air 2 and love it!
• Star votives: Add more patriotic flair to your 4th of July decorations with a set of red and blue star shaped votive candles from Dollar Tree.

To make your own DIY patriotic candles, you’ll need to start by downloading my free SVG file. To get your own, simply subscribe to my email list, upload the file to Design Space, and cut the words with your Cricut.

DIY Dollar Tree Candle Holders

After downloading your SVG, unzip the file and upload the SVG into Design Space. Select each individual elements and use the color tool to change the colors to red and blue.

When you load the SVG, you’ll see that each letter of the words is a separate piece. To make it easier to cut your design,

Once you have all the colors changed, you’ll need to weld each part of the design with similar colors to make it easier to apply the vinyl to your candle holders. Start by hiding all the red elements of the design by clicking the small eye next to each element in the right-hand menu. Next, select all the blue elements with your mouse. Next, click the weld button in the bottom right corner to connect the letters together so they stay as a group when you’re ready to cut them.

After that, all you need to do is repeat the process with the red elements of the design.

The design should be sized perfectly to fit on your Dollar Tree candle holders, but if you’re using a different set of candles, you may need to resize the SVG. If so, make sure to select both the blue and red elements of the design at once before resizing.

When you’re ready to start cutting, follow the instructions on the screen and add the first vinyl color to the mat. Load the mat into the machine and cut that color. Then, remove that color and replace it with the second color. Reload the mat into the machine and cut that part of the design.

After both parts of the design has been cut, unload the cutting mat from the machine and remove the vinyl from the mat. Use your Cricut weeding tool to remove all the extra vinyl surrounding the words.

Cut out each section of the design so that it fits perfectly on the front of the candle holders. Then, place a piece of transfer tape on top of each element of the design so you can transfer it to the glass.

Before you place your vinyl on your glass votive holders, you’re probably wondering how to get vinyl to stick to glass? The key to getting your vinyl to stick is to clean the glass first! Glass candle holders, like these from Dollar Tree, usually have a waxy coating on the outside that keeps the vinyl from sticking. Use nail polish remover with acetone to clean the wax off the glass. Add a small amount of acetone to a paper towel and rub it over the surface of the glass. Allow the acetone to dry completely before you add your vinyl.

Place the largest part of the design on the side of your candle holder first, making sure it’s centered and straight. Press the vinyl down on the glass to help it stick and stay in place, then remove the transfer tape.

Next, place the smaller part of the design where it’s supposed to go in relation to the rest of the vinyl. Make sure the elements are centered on the glass, then press the vinyl down and remove the transfer tape.
