The first step to putting this simple turkey craft together is to paint the turkeys. I found it was easier to paint the turkeys by removing the string at the top of the ornaments. If you want to hang the turkeys after they’re put together, just set the string aside. You can add it back to the top after the paint has dried. Give each of the turkeys a few coats of paint, then allow them to dry completely.

Next, start adding leaves to the back of the turkey as the feathers. Start with larger leaves at the very back of the turkey so they poke through after adding more layers.

Continue gluing feathers in layers until the whole turkey is covered. Once the glue dries, you can add the string back to the top of your turkey ornaments to hang them for everyone to enjoy.

Use these fun craft ideas to keep your kids busy during Thanksgiving dinner:

Set out a craft table for the kids to work at while the adults prepare dinner. Lay out the supplies for this easy turkey craft and let the kids put it together while everyone else works on dinner. If you have younger kids working on the craft, it may be a good idea to assign an adult or older kid to watch over the crafting to make sure the kids don’t make a mess with the paint.

Paint the turkeys ahead of time. If you have younger kids who will be making this craft on Thanksgiving, consider painting the turkeys ahead of time. This will prevent a mess being made with paint while the kids craft. All the young kids have to do is decorate the turkeys with leaves.

Let the kids decorate with markers. Another less messy alternative to painting is to use markers. Your kids can draw on the wood ornaments with the markers before adding the leaves to add some color and design to their turkeys.

Skip the paint altogether. Or you could just leave the turkeys as natural wood ornaments. Turkeys are brown anyway, so this method would work well for kids who may make a mess with paint.

Add magnets to the back. Don’t have anywhere to hang your turkey ornaments? Leave the string off the top and stick some magnets to the back. Then, you can display them on the refrigerator in the kitchen after the kids are making thier leaf turkeys.
