Finding fun kid’s crafts is a great way to enjoy some creative time together with your little ones. But not all crafts are created equally when you’re working with preschoolers. Luckily, this simple craft is perfect for kids in this age group!

On top of being easy to make, this popsicle stick barn craft can be put together with just a handful of supplies! To make your own preschool barn craft, you’ll need:

  • Large popsicle sticks: The base of your popsicle stick barn will be made with large popsicle sticks. The bigger the sticks you use, the larger your barn will be when it’s finished! You’ll need a total of eight large popsicle sticks to make this craft.
  • Small popsicle sticks: The decorations on the front of the barn are made with small popsicle sticks. To make this barn craft, you’ll need seven small sticks.
  • Sharp scissors: While this craft is easy to make with kids, there is one step that an adult should do. To cut the popsicle sticks, you will need to use a pair of sharp scissors.
  • Glue: I found that hot glue is the easiest way to get your popsicle sticks to stick together. But if you’re making this craft with younger kids, you can also use plain white glue. Just keep in mind that you’ll need to hold the sticks in place while the glue dries to ensure they don’t pull up off the front of the barn.
  • Paint: To make your barn look like a classic red barn found on farms, you’ll need red and white paint to decorate your craft. I suggest using acrylic craft paint to paint your popsicle sticks. It’s great for painting wood and safe for kids to use.

Now that you know what you’ll need, gather up your supplies and get started on your own DIY barn craft right now!

How to Make a Barn Out of Popsicle Sticks

Turning your popsicle sticks into a barn is so easy! Just follow these quick steps to make an adorable wooden barn with your kids.

The first step to putting your barn craft together is to make the barn itself. To hold all your popsicle sticks together, line them all up on a flat surface. Then, place two small popsicle sticks on the back and secure them in place with glue. You might need to trim the ends of your small popsicle sticks if they hang over the edge.

Once the glue is dry on the back of your popsicle stick barn, you can start painting. Paint all the large popsicle sticks red. And paint all the small popsicle sticks white. I used two coats of paint to completely cover the sticks, making sure to allow the paint to dry between coats.

After the paint is completely dry, you can start assembling your barn! First, build the door by placing two small popsicle sticks around one inch apart in the center of the barn. Glue both those sticks in place.

Next, trim the ends of one of the small sticks and glue it on the top of the two sticks to complete the barn door. If you’re making this craft with a young child, it’s a good idea if you trim the stick, then allow your kid to attach the piece to the top of the door.

The last step is to make the X on the front of your barn door. Glue one popsicle stick across the front of the white door frame at an angle. Attach each end of the stick to the top and bottom corner of the door frame. Then, glue the second popsicle stick in the opposite direction.

This part of the craft is where using a hot glue gun comes in handy. That’s because I had trouble with the bottom corner of the X sticking to the bottom popsicle stick. It wanted to pull up after I let go of it. But adding a little more glue and holding it in place until the glue dried did the trick.

If you’d rather not use hot glue, you can help fix the problem by cutting the center of the top stick and trimming it out so that the popsicle stick lays flat on both ends. It’s an extra step but worth it if you’d rather be safe than sorry when it comes to using a hot glue gun with your preschooler.

The last step to making this craft is to attach the roof to your barn. Start by lining up the remaining two popsicle sticks at an angle on the top of the barn. When you have the sticks centered, use a pencil to draw a line on the stick where the two popsicle sticks should meet to form the peak of the roof.

After you draw your line on the top stick, remove it and draw the same line on the bottom stick. Then, use your scissors to cut along the lines.

After that, all that’s left to do is glue your roof pieces in place! Just line up the points of the popsicle sticks that you just cut to form the peak, then glue the sticks in place on top of the barn.
