With the help of a few dollar store craft supplies, you can create an adorable farmhouse style sign to decorate your home this Halloween. And the best part is that you can do it for under $10! What could be better than that?
But my favorite part about this easy project is that you can get everything you need to make it at Dollar Tree! That means there’s no running around to different sotres to find the items you need to make your own Halloween ghost sign!
Dollar Tree Ghost Craft
Since you can use dollar store supplies to make this cute sign, it’s one of my favorite budget-friendly Halloween crafts.
To make your own Dollar Tree Halloween craft at home, you’ll need just a few cheap craft supplies and Halloween decorations from your favorite dollar store, including:
- Wood plank signs. To make the base of your sign, you’ll need three long wooden plank signs from the craft aisle of Dollar Tree. Look with the other wood craft items to find them.
- Popsicle sticks. Since you only need two popsicle sticks for this craft, you can probably use what you have on hand. They’ll go on the back of your sign, so any size and color will do.
- Wooden ghost. Find the wooden ghost for your Halloween sign in the seasonal section of the store. The ghost I used had a stand on the bottom, but you can sometimes find ghost ornaments in this section during Halloween that would also work for this craft.
- Metal Halloween words. Grab your farmhouse style metal Halloween words from the seasonal section of the store. The package comes with three words — beware, haunted, and spooky — so you can create two more crafts with your leftover words!
- White and black paint. The base of the sign will be painted black and the ghost will be painted white. I used regular acrylic craft paint for both items, but you could also use chalk paint to give it a more rustic look.
- Buffalo check ribbon. I found a roll of black and white buffalo check ribbon in the fall section of the store, but you can use any type of ribbon to decorate the top of your sign.
How to Make a Dollar Tree Ghost Sign
You’re going to love how simple this sign is to make! So grab your dollar store craft supplies and let’s get started!
First of all, if you’re using the same ghost that I am, you’ll need to remove the stand from the bottom. I just kept wiggling the ghost and pulling up until it came off. If you have any rough edges on the bottom of your ghost, use some sandpaper to smooth them out. Then, discard the stand because you don’t need it.
Now that you have your ghost ready to go, it’s time to put your sign together. Start by removing the string from the top of each plank. Then, lay the three boards together on a flat surface, making sure the ends are evenly lined up. Glue three or four popsicle sticks to the back of the boards to hold them all together. Lightly press down on the popsicle sticks to hold them in place while the glue dries.
Once your glue has dried, flip the sign over and paint the entire sign black. I only needed a couple of coats of paint to fully cover the wood.
If you want to make your sign look a little more rustic, try running a piece of sandpaper over the seams to rough up the edges a little bit before adding your decorations on top.
The ghost should be painted white. You can use acrylic craft paint or chalk paint to cover the ghost. Then, let it dry completely.
You can also add a vintage look to your ghost by rubbing your sandpaper around the edges of the ghost, along with the eyes and mouth.
Next, grab your hot glue gun. Attach the ghost to the center fo the sign. Then, use the glue to attach the metal words to the bottom of the sign. I chose the word “spooky” for my sign, but any of the three words included in the pack will work perfectly for this fun ghost craft!
The final step to decorating your ghost sign is to add your ribbon to the top. Thread the ends of the ribbon through each hole on the end of the sign and tie a bow in the front. You can also use the ribbon on the back of the sign to hang it on the wall.
Halloween Ghost Craft Ideas
See how easy it is to make your own dollar store ghost craft? And with these fun craft ideas, you can easily create your own Halloween sign to decorate your farmhouse home.
These craft adjustments and additions will help you create a personalized Halloween decoration for your home:
- Use your Cricut. Can’t find those cute metal words at your Dollar Tree? Don’t worry! Just grab some silver vinyl paper from the craft aisle at your store and cut the words using your Cricut. After that, all you have to do is use a piece of transfer tape to attach the words to the sign.
- Use vinyl for the backdrop. Instead of painting your sign, make things a little easier for yourself by using vinyl as the backdrop for your sign. I found some cute buffalo check vinyl in the craft aisle of my store that would make a perfect background for this craft!
- Try different color combos. Black and white are classic Halloween colors, but that doesn’t mean you have to stick to this color pallete for your own sign. Why not add some orange to the background or mix some pastels into your design for even more Halloween fun?
