How to Make Gluten Free Apple Upside Down Cake
You’re going to love how simple this fall upside down cake is to make! Since you can prepare the cake in a matter of minutes, you’ll be able to enjoy a delicious apple dessert in no time.

Before you can start preparing your cake, you’ll need to take a minute to create the apple topping for your spice cake. Start by mixing the brown sugar, butter, and cinnamon together until the mixture begins to crumble. Sprinkle it all over the bottom of a greased 9×13 baking pan. Then, layer your sliced apples over the top of the brown sugar mixture.

Once you have your apple topping ready to go, set the pan aside while you prepare the cake ingredients. Start by whisking together the gluten free flour, cornstarch, baking powder, ginger, cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice, and cloves. Continue stirring until all the dry ingredients are well combined.

In a separate bowl, beat together the softened butter and brown sugar. Keep beating until the mixture becomes light and creamy, which may take a few minutes.

After that, add the eggs to the bowl one at a time, beating between each addition. When you add the last egg to the bowl, add the vanilla too, then beat until the mixture is well combined.

Then add half the dry ingredient mixture to the bowl and beat until well mixed, making sure all the dry ingredients are fully incorporated into the butter mixture.

After that, add half the milk to the bowl and beat on low to combine. Then add the remaining dry ingredients and remaining milk beating between each addition.

Once all the ingredients are mixed well, transfer the cake batter to the pan with your apples. Carefully spread the batter evenly across the cake pan, making sure not to disturb the apple slices while you’re spreading.

Bake the apple upside down cake at 350 degrees for around 40 minutes, until the edges of the cake are beginning to brown and a tootpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
Allow the cake to cool in the pan for around 10 minutes. When the pan is cool enough to touch, run a knife around the edge of the cake to loosen it, then flip the cake over onto your serving plate.
Once the cake has flipped, allow it to cool completely before slicing and serving.
Gluten Free Apple Upside Down Cake Recipe Ideas
You’re going to love just how easy this upside down cake is to make! And since it looks amazing, everyone at your party is sure to be impressed with your baking skills.

With the help of these baking tips and ideas, you’ll be able to prepare a delicious fall dessert for any occasion:
- Create a design with the apples. Laying the slices in rows is a simple way to decorate the top of your cake. But if you want to get creative, trying placing the apple slices in different designs around the pan to make the cake look even more beautiful.
- Bake the cake in round pans. The amount cake batter in this recipe is enough for one 9×13 baking pan or two 8 inch round pans. That means you can make two round cakes with one recipe! If you’re baking in a smaller round pan, you will need to reduce the bake time to around 30 minutes to account for the smaller cake size.
- Flip the cake while it’s still warm. While it may be tempting to allow the cake to cool before you remove it from the pan, to keep the apples from sticking it’s important to flip the cake while it’s still warm. That’s because the brown sugar syrup surrounding the apples will solidfy the longer it sits in the pan, making it more difficult to remove the cake without messing up your apple topping.
