DIY Witch Decoration
This easy witch decoration is a great way to add a spooky look to your yard or your front porch this Halloween! But the best part about making this DIY decoration is that you don’t have to spend a ton of money putting it together.
You won’t believe how simple these cute tomato cage witches are to make! That’s because there’s no special skills required. All you need are a few simple supplies and a few minutes of your time!
To put together your own DIY witch decorations, you’ll need:
- Tomato cages: To form the body of your witches, you’ll need one tomato cage per witch. I just grabbed three cages from my garden. But you can also find these items in the garden section of Wal-Mart or any hardware store.
- Landscape fabric pins: Since these decorations are lightweight and top-heavy, you’ll need a simple way to keep them secure in the ground. I grabbed a few landscape fabric pins from my garden and placed them over the bottom of the tomato cages to hold them in place. You could also use bricks to hold the cages on the ground.
- Styrofoam balls: Use large Styrofoam balls to make the heads of your witch decorations. I suggest using balls that are at least 8 inches (or larger) in diameter.
- Black trash bags: You can’t go wrong by adding flowers to your wreath! During the fall months, you’ll find a variety of rustic flower options perfect for decorating your Halloween wreath. In addition to the floral section, you can also find seasonally spooky flowers on the endcaps of the aisles and in the Halloween section of the store.
- Black tulle or mesh fabric: To give your witches a classier look, cover the trash bags with some black mesh fabric. I used around 20 yards of fabric to make three witches.
- Witch hats: You can’t make witches without witch hats! Decorate the top of each tomato cage witch with a hat to finish creating your spooky decor.
How to Make a Tomato Cage Witch
After you have all your supplies ready to go, you can start putting your tomato cage witches together!
Start by flipping the tomato cage over so that it’s upside down. Then, place one Styrofoam ball on top of each cage, pushing the ball into the stakes to hold it in place.
At this point, it’s also a good idea to add your landscaping pins around the bottom of the cage to hold them in place. If it’s windy while you’re working, it’s difficult to decorate the witches while the wind is blowing.
I used three pins around the bottom of each cage and they’ve stayed in the ground for weeks in spite of the windy conditions!
Once you have the tomato cages anchored to the ground, you can start covering them in trash bags. My trash bags weren’t large enough to cover the cages fully, so I placed one bag on the top of the cage and one bag on the bottom.
That’s why it’s a good idea to get extra large black bags when you’re putting together this DIY project. That way, the bags will fully cover the cages.
When the tomato cages are fully covered, use a piece of ribbon or a strip of tulle to tie around the bottom of the head to give the head a little bit more distinction from the body.
Next, you can add the black tulle over the top of the trash bags. I used two long pieces of tulle to cover each witch, measuring the strips to go from the ground in front of the witches, up over the top, and down to the ground in the back.
When you have the witch completely covered in mesh, use a piece of ribbon or tulle to tie the mesh off around the head one more time.
Next, give your witches a little bit of a waist by tying a long piece of tool or ribbon around the center of each witch.
Finish decorating your spooky witches by adding a witch hat on top. I attached my witch hats to the top of each witch with safety pins to keep them from blowing off in the wind.
