To make your construction paper Santa hat craft, you’ll just need these simple craft supplies:

  • Red paper: We used red construction paper to make our Santa hats, but you could also use red cardstock if that’s what you have on hand. Any type of red paper will work to make your own DIY hats.
  • Cotton balls: Add some texture to your hats with the help of some cotton balls. In addition to cotton balls, you can also use white pom poms to decorate the top and bottom of your Santa hat.

In addition to these simple craft supplies, you’ll also need some glue. You can use plain white school glue or glue sticks to glue the pieces of your Santa hat onto the printable template.

How to Make a Construction Paper Santa Hat

Once you have your Santa hat template downloaded, all you have to do is print it out on cardstock or copy paper. After that, your kids can use it as a guide to make their own Santa craft at home or in the classroom.

The first step to making your Santa hats is to cut your construction paper into small pieces. You or your kids can use scissors to cut the paper into tiny squares. Or simply rip the paper into small squares for your kids to use to make their Santa craft.

Once you have all the paper ripped or cut, it’s time to start gluing! Add a line of glue along the bottom of the red triangle. Then, your kids can glue the paper pieces in a row along the line of glue.

Continue gluing the paper to the template until then entire red triangle on the page is filled with pieces of red construction paper.

When all the construction paper has been glued, your kids can start adding the cotton balls to the Santa hat template. Add some glue to the large white rectangle and place the cotton balls in a row until the whole rectangle is covered.

Finish making the Santa hat by adding some cotton balls to the top of the triangle. Place some glue around the center of the circle at the top of the template, then press two to three cotton balls in place.

After that, all that’s left to do is let the glue dry and your adorable Christmas craft is finished!

  • Cut out the hats. You can take this craft idea one step further and cut out the Santa hat shape. the hats can be cut before or after they’re decorated!
  • Create an elf hat. Turn this printable Santa hat craft into a cute elf hat by changing the colors of your supplies. Use green construction paper to fill the hat, then add red pom poms to the bottom and top to make it look like an elf hat.
  • Use only construction paper. Adding cotton balls is a great way to add more texture to your craft. But if you don’t have any on hand, you can also use white construction paper for this section of the project. Just cut white paper into small squares and glue them along the bottom rectangle and top circle.
