You only need a few easy ingredients to make these adorable Thanksgiving cupcakes come to life:

  • Chocolate cake mix – You can use your favorite brand or a gluten-free mix to keep it allergy-friendly. You can even make your own chocolate cupcakes from scratch using your favorite recipe!
  • Chocolate icing – A creamy chocolate frosting helps the sprinkles stick and adds that rich, fudgy flavor. Use a store-bought jar or make your own chocolate icing to decorate your cupcakes.
  • Chocolate sprinkles – They give the cupcakes a “feathery” look for your turkey base. I used chocolate sprinkles to decorate my turkey cupcakes but any brown or black sprinkles would work.
  • Candy melts (yellow, orange, and red) – Use candy melts to create the feathers on your turkeys. Just melt and fill a piping bag to make colorful candy feathers.
  • Candy eyes – Use these fun candy eyes to decorate those silly turkey faces! The kids will love them!
  • Reese’s Pieces or M&Ms – Use yellow and orange candies to make the turkey’s beak and wattle.

How to Make Mini Turkey Cupcakes

You’re going to love how quick and easy it is to make your own Thanksgiving turkey cupcakes! All you need are a few minutes of prep work and some time to decorate your cute holiday treats.

The first step to making these cute snacks is to prepare the chocolate mini cupcakes. Prepare your cake mix according to the package instructions. You can use regular or gluten free chocolate cake mix to prepare these fun treats!

Add some mini cupcake liners to your pan and fill each cup almost full of batter. Then, bake the cupcakes for 12 to 15 minutes, until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

While the cupcakes are cooling, you can make the feathers to decorate your turkeys. Melt the candy melts in separate bowls and transfer each color into its own bag. Cut the tip off each piping bag and pipe feather shapes onto a piece of parchment paper. Let them cool and harden — these will stick into the top of your cupcakes.

Now that your feathers are ready to go, you can start decorating! Spread a thin layer of chocolate icing on each cupcake — just enough to cover the top of the cake.

Next, pour the chocolate sprinkles into a small bowl. Dip the top of each cupcake into the sprinkles, then lightly tap the bottom to knock off the extra sprinkles.

After that, it’s time to top your cupcakes with your turkey decorations! Press a yellow candy into the center for the beak and an orange one next to it for the wattle. Then, place two candy eyes above the beak.

Finish decorating your turkey treats by gently pressing one of each color candy feathers into the top of each cupcake.

And the best part about making them is how easy they are to customize! Try these recipe additions and substitutions to create some cute treats everyone at your holiday dinner will love.

  • Decorate with different candy for the feathers: Instead of creating your own feathers using colorful candy melts, you can speed up the decorating process by using candy. You can top your turkeys with candy corn, M&Ms, licorice, Reese’s Pieces, or gummy worms for fun textures and colors.
  • Make different cake flavors: Chocolate cupcakes are just one option for preparing these Thanksgiving desserts. Try vanilla cupcakes or pumpkin cupcakes as your base for a festive twist.
  • Top with different icing: In addition to chocolate, you can also use buttercream or cream cheese frosting instead of chocolate.
  • Prepare bigger portions: Make full-size cupcakes instead of mini ones for an easy Thanksgiving dessert to serve your guests.
