But the best part about this simple craft is that you only need a handful of supplies to make it! You can grab everything you need to make your own Minion ornaments at Dollar Tree or Wal-Mart!

  • Clear plastic globe ornament. I got the clear globe ornaments for this Minion craft at Dollar Tree, but you can also find blank ornaments similar to this at Wal-Mart and Amazon.
  • Yellow acrylic paint. To add the yellow color to your Minion ornaments, you’ll need paint. I suggest using acrylic craft paint. You can find bottles of paint in the craft aisle of Dollar Tree or Wal-Mart.
  • Large googly eyes. I was able to find some googly eye stickers to use for this project, which means there was no gluing involved. I got the stickers at Wal-Mart, but you can also find traditional googly eyes in the craft aisle at Dollar Tree.
  • Ribbon. We used plain black satin ribbon to creat the Minion’s goggles, as well as at the top of our ornaments to hang it on the tree. But you can use any color you want to hang your ornament! You could even add a hook to the top if you want!

How to Make a Minion Ornament

Now that you have all your supplies gathered up, it’s time to start crafting! Get your kids ready to start making their own DIY Minion ornaments to hang on your Christmas tree.

The first step to making this fun Minion ornament craft is to paint the inside of your clear globes yellow. The method you use to do this will depend on the consistency of your paint. If you’re using kid’s acrylic paint, like the kind you find at Dollar Tree, you may be able to simply pour the paint into the globe and spin the ornament to coat all the sides.

But if you’re using acrylic craft paint, like I did, you’ll need to add a very small amount of water to the paint to help it spread. Start by removing the top of the globe, then start adding a few squirts of paint around the sides of the globe. Next, add 1/4 teaspoon of water to the ornament.

Place a paper towel over the opening to keep the paint from spilling out, then let your kids twist and turn the globe around to move the paint around all the sides. You can continue adding more paint and a small amount of water to the inside of the ornament until it’s fully coated.

After all the sides of the globe are coated in paint, remove the paper towel from the opening on the top and carefully flip it over and rest the globe upside down on top of a disposable cup. As the ornament sits, the extra paint will drip out, so make sure you’re using a cup that you don’t mind throwing away!

Before your kids can start decorating the outside of your ornaments, you need to make sure all the extra paint has dripped out from the inside and that the paint is dry. Give the ornament at least four hours to sit upside down to ensure that it’s fully dry before letting your kids finish decorating.

When you’re ready to start decorating, first place the top back on the ornament. Then, cut a piece of black ribbon to fit around the center of the globe. Secure the ends of the ribbon to the back of the ornament with a hot glue gun.

Then, add two large googly eyes to the top of the ribbon to create your Minion’s goggles. If your googly eyes aren’t sticky on the back, I suggest using a hot glue gun to attach them to the front of the ornament to keep them from falling off while the ornaments are hanging on the Christmas tree.

After that, all that’s left to do is attach a piece of ribbon or a hook to the top of the ornament and hang it on your tree!

Minion Ornament Craft Ideas

Because these fun ornaments are so simple to make, they’re perfect for personalizing! That means you and your kids can have some fun getting creating with your own Christmas crafts.

Try these craft ideas while you’re putting your ornaments together to create some adorable Minion decorations for your Christmas tree:

  • Use different number of eyes. If you’ve ever watched any of the Minion movies, you know that not all Minions have two eyes. Change things up by making some ornaments with one large eye and some with two eyes.
  • Try different ornament sizes. You can also adjust the size of the ornaments to create a variety of Minions for your tree. Using smaller globes is a great way to vary the look of all your Minion decorations.
  • Use different ornament shapes. Just as Minions have different eyes, they also have different shapes. Some are round while others are oval. That means you can create different Minions by using different shaped ornaments. Luckily, you can find blank ornaments in a variety of shapes to help you create some cute Minion inspired decorations for your tree.
