Money in a Jar Gift
The best part about this simple mason jar gift idea is that it’s easy to customize. Swap out the candy inside the jar with your loved one’s favorite treat to create a personalized present for everyone on your holiday shopping list.
To make this adorable DIY Christmas gift, you’ll need just a few simple supplies, including:
- Wide mouth mason jar. I suggest using wide mouth jars to make these gifts because you’ll need to be able to stick your hand inside the jar to arrange the candy and add the money. But you can use any size jar you want for this easy present.
- Candy. To fill up my jars, I used Hershe’s Sugar Cookie Kisses because they have such cute holiday wrappers! But you can use a variety of different candies with this gift. Scroll to the bottom of the post to see even more ideas for filling your jars.
- Empty toilet paper roll. To hide the money inside your mason jar, I suggest using an empty cardboard roll from toilet paper or paper towels. The size doesn’t matter because you’ll be cutting it to fit inside the jar.
- Tape. In addition to the cardboard roll, you’ll also need some tape to hold the money in place inside the jar.
- String or ribbon. Attach your gift tag to the top of your jar with string or ribbon. You can use any type of ribbon you want for this part of the DIY gift!
- Printable gift tag. Keep reading to see how to get your own copy of my printable gift tag to decorate your mason jar gift.
- Cardstock. Make sure to print out the gift tag on heavy cardstock to help it hold up to travel as you pass out your homemade gifts.

How to Hide Money in a Jar
Now that you have your printable gift tag, all that’s left to do is put your gift together! Start by printing the tag on cardstock and cutting it out around the outer border. Then, set the tag aside while you fill up your jar.
Start by filling up your jar around 2/3 of the way full with candy. Since your money won’t take up much space inside the jar, you’ll need to add the majority of the candy to the inside of the cup before you hide the money.
After filling up your jar, grab your empty cardboard tube and cut a two-inch piece off the end. Then, cut the piece along the side to create a long strip. Roll the strip up until it’s around one-inch in diameter, then use a piece of tape to secure the end in place.
Place the cardboard tube in the center of the candy inside the jar. Then, add candy around the tube to fill up the jar the rest of the way. You want the tube to be resting at the top of the jar so that it’s easily visible when the lid is opened, so you may need to add more candy under the tube as well.
Once you have your tube in place and the jar is filled with candy, you can add your money inside. Fold up the bills and place them inside the tube, leaving the end of the bills sticking up so that your gift recipient can easily see what’s inside when they open the lid.
After that, all you have to do is add the lid the the jar and attach the tag. First, sign your name to the back of the printable tag, then use a hole punch to put a hole in the corner of the tag. Thread the ribbon through the hole and attach the tag to the top of the jar with a bow.
Money Jar Gift Ideas
Now that you see how easy it is to hide you money in a jar, it’s going to be your new favorite way to give cash gifts! Use these gift ideas to create some amazing gifts for any occasion.
Use these filling and decorating ideas to create some adorable gifts to give everyone on your Christmas list this year:
- Fill the jar with different candy. The simplest way to personalize this gift is to use your loved one’s favorite candy inside the jar. Any small candy will work for this gift, including bite-sized candy like M&Ms or individually wrapped fun size candy bars.
- Add some homemade treats to your jars. In addition to candy, you can also fill your jars with homemade Christmas treats. Use a larger jar, like a quart jar, to share home baked cookies, candy, or fudge with your money gift.
- Hide a gift card instead of cash. Would you rather give a gift card this holiday season? Instead of adding cash to your candy, just slide a gift card in the center of the candy inside the jar to create a fun hidden gift.
