You’ll need just a handful of simple supplies for this fun Halloween craft. And since I purchased the pumpkins from Dollar Tree and used ribbon and vinyl I already had at home, I only spent $3 to make this amazing DIY farmhouse Halloween decoration!

To make your DIY Halloween decoration, you’ll just need a a few of simple craft supplies, including:

  • 3 velvet covered pumpkins: You can find the velvet pumpkins I used in the Halloween section of your Dollar Tree. If you can’t find any fabric-covered pumpkins at your store, purchase three of the foam pumpkins and add your own fabric with this tutorial for fabric-covered DIY pumpkin decor.
  • Trick or treat SVG file: Keep reading to see how to get your copy of this free trick or treat SVG file to make your own pumpkins.
  • Black heat transfer vinyl: You’ll need to use heat transfer vinyl to attach the words to the front of your pumpkin. If you’re not using fabric-covered pumpkins, traditional vinyl will work just fine for this craft.
  • Cricut: To cut the words for your DIY Halloween decorations, you’ll need a cutting machine to cut the heat transfer vinyl. I use the Cricut Explore Air 2 and love it!
  • Cricut Mini Easy Press: Since the space on the front of your pumpkins is pretty small, I suggest using a Cricut Mini Easy Press to press your HTV onto the fabric. It makes it so much easier to put the vinyl on that small and bumpy space!

After downloading the SVG file, unzip the file folder and extract the files. Upload the SVG file to Design Space and select the words. Since the file is already grouped, all you need to do is resize the words to fit on your pumpkin. I suggest measuring both the width and height you want your words to be on the pumpkins to make sure they fit correctly.

For the Dollar Tree pumpkins, I made my words three inches wide, which came to be around 1.5 inches tall for each word.

Since we’ll be using heat transfer vinyl, we’ll need to flip or mirror the words before cutting them. Before getting my Cricut, I used a Silhouette for years, so I’ve gotten used to flipping the words in the design program. You can do that by selecting the “flip” menu at the top of Design Space. Click on the word flip, then select horizontally to mirror your words before cutting.

You can also mirror the words right before cutting them. Click the green “make it” button at the top right corner, then select mirror on the left-hand side of the screen under your mat size.

Either method will work when cutting HTV for your Cricut craft projects!

Now that you have your vinyl words cut, it’s time to get them ready to put on your pumpkins. Start by weeding out all that extra vinyl that you don’t need. I love using the Cricut weeding tool to make it easier to remove all those little pieces from inside the letters. After weeding the vinyl, cut out each word.

After your vinyl letters are weeded and cut, you can finally attach them to your Dollar Tree pumpkins! The process for attaching your words to your pumpkins is pretty easy — especially if you have a mini-press.

Start by lining up the words so they’re centered on the pumpkins, then press the sticky part of the plastic to the pumpkin to hold it in place. Hold the vinyl in place with one hand, then use the mini press to press the vinyl onto the pumpkin.

Continue pressing the vinyl on each pumpkin until you’ve added all the words to the pumpkins.

You could leave your pumpkins as-is and simply line them up, but I wanted to create a tall decoration for my Halloween decor, so I stacked them. To stack your pumpkins, you’ll need to remove the stem from the pumpkins that say “or” and “treat.”

Getting those stems out of the pumpkins is a little more difficult than you may think. I ended up cutting the fabric around the stem. Don’t worry! You won’t be able to see it once you glue the pumpkins together. Just tuck in the excess fabric in the hole on top or glue it in place using your hot glue gun.

Once the stems are removed, just put some glue along the top of the pumpkin and press the top pumpkin in place. Repeat the process until all the pumpkins are glued in place.

Finishy by topping your pumpkin with a buffalo check bow to add a little bit of farmhouse style your DIY Halloween home decor. And that’s it! See how simple this adorable Halloween decoration is to make?
