To make your farmhouse Christmas ornaments DIY, you’ll just need a few simple craft supplies, including:
- Wood embroidery hoops: These mini four-inch embroidery hoops are the perfect size to create some adorable farmhouse style ornaments.
- Red and black buffalo check fabric: I used a fat quarter of flannel fabric for this craft and still had plenty leftover for another Christmas project!
- Silver heat transfer vinyl: I love the look of this silver metallic heat transfer vinyl, but white HTV would also work well for this project.
- Christmas SVG file: Keep reading to see how to get your copy of this free Christmas SVG file to make your own ornaments.
- Cricut: To cut the words for your DIY farmhouse ornaments, you’ll need a cutting machine to cut the vinyl. I use the Cricut Explore Air 2 and love it!
Free Christmas SVG

To make your own farmhouse Christmas ornaments, you’ll need to start by downloading my free decal SVG file. The printable includes three different Christmas phrases for your ornaments. To get your own, simply subscribe to my email list, cut the words with your favorite cutting machine, and apply them to your painted pumpkins.

After downloading the SVG file, upload it into Design Space. After loading the SVG, you’ll notice that each letter of each word is a separate element. When you have decided which words you want to use for your farmhouse ornaments, use your mouse to select all the letters of the word, then group them together with the group function in the upper right corner.

Next, weld the letters together so they stay as a group when you’re ready to cut them. After that, you can resize your words to fit on your ornaments. As you’re resizing, make sure to measure the width and height of your embroidery hoops. You want to be sure all the letters fit on the front of the fabric inside the hoops.
When measuring your embroidery hoop, make sure to measure the inside of the hoop, not the outside. For my four-inch hoops, I cut the words to be around three inches tall to be sure they fit nicely inside the hoop.

After you have all your words resized and ready to cut, hit the make it button and get ready to cut. But before you send the design to your Cricut, be sure to select the Mirror option on the left menu to flip the design over so it will cut backwards. This will ensure your letters aren’t backwards when you put them on your ornanments.

Use your Cricut weeding tool to remove all the extra vinyl surrounding your words. Then, you’re ready to start adding your Christmas phrases to your farmhouse ornaments!
Farmhouse Style Christmas Ornaments
Now that you have your vinyl words ready to go, you can start getting your embroidery hoop ornaments ready.

Start by cutting squares of red and black fabric to fit inside your hoops, leaving a little bit of extra fabric overhanging outside the width of the hoop to be sure it stays put when you put it inside.

Then, you can start adding your Christmas words to each of the pieces of fabric. Line up the HTV on the center of your fabric and press it down to hold it in place while you iron the vinyl on to the fabric.

I love using my mini press for small projects like this. The little press made it so easy to transfer the vinyl to the fabric to create my farmhouse ornaments.

Give the vinyl a chance to cool slightly, then place the fabric in the embroidery hoop. Screw the knob on top of the hoop until it’s tight, then tie a piece of twine around the top so you can hang your ornaments on your Christmas tree.

These adorable farmhouse style ornaments are going to look so amazing on your Christmas tree!

Emily is a midwestern mom of two boys. She loves all things DIY — from home renovations to kids birthday party planning. Whether she’s making a new farmhouse craft for her home or helping her kids with a cool activity, you can bet she’s in the middle of some kind of DIY project (or three) right now!
I love this idea but I cannot afford a Cricut or other type of cutting machine. Do you think I could use some type of stencil and a spray paint or something to mimic this? I wouldn’t use flannel but just regular cotton buffalo check fabric. Thanks for the idea but is there anything you can suggest for someone who cannot afford a Cricut?
You could definitely make these ornaments with stencils. I know Hobby Lobby has some cute stencils that would work for these ornaments! I would suggest using fabric paint if you’re planning on painting with stencils. Or if you have nice handwriting, use fabric markers (you can find them in the craft section of Walmart or the sewing section of your craft store) to write the words on the fabric.
