Handpainted Farmhouse Christmas Towels Inspired by Rae Dunn

I just love decorating for Christmas. And my favorite part about Christmas decorating is creating my own simple Christmas crafts. This year, I decided to make some adorable handpainted farmhouse Christmas towels inspired by Rae Dunn pottery.

Rae Dunn pottery is all the rage this year, especially if you’re loving on some farmhouse style as much as I am. These simple, adorable dishes are the perfect addition to any farmhouse kitchen, which is probably why you can’t find them anywhere!

The thing I like most about these adorable dishes is their simplicity, which is where I drew my inspiration for my handpainted farmhouse Christmas towels. I used simple, skinny lettering and Christmas images to create a set of rustic kitchen towels.

To make these towels, download the designs and open them in Silhouette Studio. I used my Silhouette Cameo to cut out the designs. To create a simple stencil, use a freezer paper!  Just cut out a 12 x 12 sheet of freezer paper and place it on your cutting mat with the shiny side down. Then, set your cut settings to blade 3, thickness 3, and speed 10.

Cut out the design and peel the sheet off the cutting mat. Before attaching it to the towel, make sure your towel has been washed and ironed. Then, place the stencil on the towel and iron it on. When ironing, focus on putting as much pressure on the stencil as possible to make sure it sticks. It only takes a few seconds of hard pressure to heat the paper enough to make it stick.

Once you have the large section of your stencil ironed on, add the smaller pieces like the inside of the B and O in the designs. Just line them up and place the iron on top to fill in each letter.

When you’re sure the stencil is nice and stuck, you can begin painting. I use basic craft paint that has been prepped with fabric medium. The fabric medium thins the paint and allows it to soak into the fabric. It’s less stiff than craft paint used on its own and it lasts through washes in the washing machine.

When painting, use a foam brush and lightly dab the paint on the towel, making sure to get all around the edge of the stencil. I like the rustic look of one coat, which may leave a few white spots poking through the paint. If you would like a more solid color, a second coat can be added after the first coat dries.

When the paint is almost dry, start pulling the stencil off. You don’t need to be gentle. Just rip it off, then step back and admire your work on your DIY farmhouse Christmas towels!
