Charcuterie boards are a great appetizer option for any party. And the best part about those boards is that you can customize them, which means you can easily make them into gluten free appetizers. But sometimes, you don’t need to prepare an entire board for your get-together. In that case, why not try jarcuterie instead? How to Make a Charcuterie Jar

Now that you know what’s in my charcuteri jars, you’re probably wondering how to make them. Here are the supplies I used to make my mason jar charcuterie:

  • Half pint jars: The size of these jars is perfect for a quick snack or delicious appetizer. You could also use pint-size jars with longer sticks to serve your charcuterie.
  • Bamboo skewers: These bamboo sticks are a great option for serving the different elements of your appetizers. And they’re short enough to fit perfectly inside a half-pint jar. I got these sticks from the party section of Wal-Mart.
  • Appetizer picks: Another option for displaying your charcuterie ingredients are appetizer picks. I found these two-pronged picks at Hobby Lobby and they were perfect for adding my Babybel cheese and mini pickles to the jars.

The first step to making your charcuterie jars is to fill the jars halfway full of mixed nuts. The nuts are a salty snack and a prop for the sticks, allowing them to rest inside the jar without falling over.

After adding your nuts, it’s time to start building your charcuterie jars. There are a few fun ways to display the ingredients in your jar to make them look as good as they taste. One way to add your meat and cheese is to stack folded meat slices on top of cheese cubes on your skewer.

Or you can simply fold the meat slices and slide them in the sticks by themselves. To create this layered effect, I just folded the pepperoni slices in half, then in half again to create a wedge shape. After that, slide the slice on the skewer and separate each layer of the slice to fluff it up.

Smaller items, like these Babybel cheese wheels are perfect for the smaller appetizer picks. You could also use toothpicks to add these smaller ingredients to your jars.

The pickles fit perfectly on the smaller skewers, too. Just add a couple mini pickles to each pick, and place it in the front of your charcuterie jar.

Since these olives already have the pits removed, they fit perfectly on top of a skewer. You can easily slide the skewer into the olive through the hole on top.

Mason Jar Appetizer Ideas

The ingredients I used in my mason jar appetizers is perfect for anyone who’s gluten free or on a low carb diet. But that doesn’t mean you have to use the ingredients I listed! There are a variety of different types of ingredients you can include in your jars:

  • Crackers. Many people enjoy eating crackers with their meat and cheese. Adding a few crackers to the jar is a great way to add some crunchy ingredients to your jarcuterie.
  • Something sweet. Balance the savory and salty ingredients with something sweet. Adding some chocolate covered nuts to the bottom of the jar or sticking some cookie sticks in along with your meat and cheese is a great way for your guests to cleanse their palate as they’re eating.
  • Fruit. Another sweet option to consider adding to your charcuterie jars is fruit. Adding smaller fruits, like grapes, rasperries, blueberries, or strawberries, to a skewer is a great way to balance out all the salty elements of the jar.
  • Pretzels. If you’re looking for a way to add some crunch to your jars without crackers, why not add pretzels? You can keep the jars gluten free by using gluten free pretzels or add large pretzel rods to your jars for a crunchy option.
