8 Family Friendly Halloween Party Themes
Halloween is definitely my favorite holiday, making it one of the best times to throw a fun Halloween party. Most of my party planning has kids in mind, but a lot of Halloween party themes are more adult-focused. That’s why I decided to put this list together. These eight family friendly Halloween party themes are perfect for kids of any age. And the best part about each of these themes is that they can all be customized for your own family, whether your kids enjoy a little more fright on Halloween night or they prefer to avoid being scared on the spooky holiday.
Halloween Harvest Party
For a completely spook-free Halloween party, a harvest party is the way to go. It totally fits the Halloween theme without any of the potentially scary elements other Halloween party themes may have. Harvest parties typically serve as a way for farmers to celebrate their harvest at the end of the growing season, so incorporating seasonal crops as part of your décor is the way to go. In addition to using pumpkins and gourds, consider adding other fall favorites like hay bales and corn stalks in your décor. Your food can also feature some delicious fall flavors, like pumpkin or cinnamon. From Playdates to Parties made the most of this fun party theme by including pretty fall colors in everything from their décor to their food.
Zombie Party
While hosting a Walking Dead zombie party might not be family friendly, a tamer version of this popular Halloween character is definitely a fun idea. There are a variety of family-friendly ways to use a zombie theme this year. I love the zombie science take Tikkido did at their Halloween party, which included soda in test tubes, brain cookies, and lots of dry ice. Other popular zombie party themes could include an apocalyptic style zombie attack party or a tamer Plants Vs. Zombies theme.
Halloween Candy
Candy is often the reason kids love to celebrate the holiday, so it would make the perfect family-friendly Halloween party theme. As one of the most popular Halloween candies, candy corn is one of the best family friendly Halloween party themes. Simply incorporate the colors orange, yellow, and white into your décor and food to instantly create a fun, family-friendly party, like the cute party pictured above from Catch My Party. And if candy corn isn’t your thing, there are other ways to throw a fun Halloween candy themed party. Set up a spooky candy bar filled with all of your favorite candies or host a cute trick-or-treat themed party featuring a variety of candy options for your guests.
Witches
Witches are another perennial Halloween favorite for kids, so why not add it to your list of family friendly Halloween party themes? There are so many ways you can incorporate witches into your Halloween décor – from adorable witch hat cookies like these from Clean Living Clean Eating to smoking witch cauldrons on your food table. And you can make this theme as spooky or as tame as you want – use scary witches with sharp nails and green teeth or decorate with the Sanderson sisters in mind – the choice is up to you!
Glow in the Dark
Halloween is all about embracing the dark, so using darkness as the theme of your Halloween party is a great idea. This creep cool glow in the dark party from Tikkido makes the most of the spooky theme by using fun black light effects on everything from their food to their decorations. In addition to adding cool glow in the dark elements to your family friendly Halloween party themes decorations, you can also use the theme as a fun costume suggestion for your guests. They’ll love taking part in the glow in the dark fun by creating a cool costume that glows at your party.
Skeletons
When deciding which of these family friendly Halloween themes you want to use this year, it’s best to think about the different elements of the party planning process. One of the most important elements of your theme is the décor, so finding the perfect decorations should be at the top of your to-do list. Luckily, skeletons are one of the most popular Halloween decorations you can buy, making this theme simple to execute. And if traditional skeletons re a little too creepy for your kids, consider taking another approach to your decorating like Michelle’s Party Plan It did with her fun Lego skeleton.
Haunted House
Turning your home into a spooky haunted house is a great way to celebrate Halloween. Why not turn this fun decorating idea into a full-blown family friendly party theme? Your kids will love seeing your home transform into a creepy haunted house, and if you regularly decorate your home for the holiday, you probably already have most of what you need to decorate. On top of spooky decorations, there are so many fun food ideas for a haunted house party theme, from cute ghost meringues to punch filled with floating eyeballs. This cute haunted house party from Catch my Party really sets the scene for their Halloween bash with a set of fun signs warning their guests of what’s to come.
Spiders
Spiders are super scary to a lot of people, making them an awesome contender as a one of the top family friendly Halloween party themes. From spooky spider webs to creep crawlers big and small, there are some many big things you can do with this little insect on Halloween. And while spiders may be a scary topic for many people, your party doesn’t have to be super creepy to make an impact. I love the modern take Pink Peppermint Design used in their spider party, which features orange and black as the basis for their design and incorporated a variety of spiders throughout their décor and food.

Oh gosh, spiders really freak me out so I couldn’t do that! LOL I love the Zombie and Halloween Candy ideas for a theme. How fun!! I used to throw themed Halloween parties for my friends – we did Clue one year that was great – but now I tend to just have Halloween movie nights. 🙂

OMG. I love your site and I love all of these ideas. I create a Halloween dinner every year for my kids but never go with a theme. This year, I will be using one of these great ideas. I am loving the glow in the dark and the spider!
What cute ideas! I love the decorations for all of them! We usually go with a harvest theme to keep it from being too scary for all the little people, but you have me rethinking my traditions!
