Supplies for Your DIY Mother’s Day Gift

To create this easy DIY Mother’s Day gift, you’ll need:

• Round coffee filters
• Water-based markers
• Paint brush
• Scissors
• Paper straws
• Glue

How to Make Coffee Filter Flowers

The first few steps of this craft are sure to be a big hit with kids of any age. To make your coffee filter flowers, you’ll first need to prep your coffee filters. Start by flattening the filters out. To make one flower, you’ll need five flattened coffee filters. Stack those filters on top of each other, then use a water-based marker to color around the edge of just the top filter.

After the edge of the filter is colored in, fill a small bowl with water and dip a paintbrush into the water. Paint the water over the marker, pulling the brush in toward the center of the filter. Continue doing this until the entire filter is damp.

Allow your stack of coffee filters to dry completely, then fold the entire stack in half. Fold the stack in half one more time, so the stack of coffee filters looks like the above photo.

Hold the stack of filters in place with one hand by gripping the point, then use scissors to cut strips into the stack of filters, cutting halfway down the stack.

After the strips have been cut, use the scissors to cut points on the end of each of the strips.

Finish your cutting by cutting the tip off the point at the bottom of your coffee filter stack.

Unfold the stack of coffee filters carefully, then push a paper straw through the hole in the center of the stack.

Create your flower by separating the coffee filters from the stack and gluing them to the paper straw. Start by covering the end of the straw with glue and wrapping the first filter around the straw. Then, add some glue to the bottom of that filter and wrap the next filter around the bottom of the last. Continue this process until all the coffee filters have been glued to the straw.

Color different sections of the filters different colors for a rainbow effect or color a variety of colors all over the filters for a tie-dye effect.
• Skip cutting the points. If you’re making this craft with younger kids, it may be a good idea to skip the step where you cut points on the end of the strips. Or if you still want the effect, let an adult help your little one with this step of the craft.
