What is in Buffalo Chicken Dip?
The base of this dip is cream cheese, giving it a smooth and creamy texture that matches well with just about anything you dip in it. And since it’s a homemade buffalo chicken dip, it’s sure to appeal to just about everyone at the party.

To make this easy baked buffalo chicken dip recipe, you’ll need just a few ingredients:
- Cream cheese: To create a thick and creamy base for your dip, full fat cream cheese is a must. Make sure you start with softened cream cheese to make it easier to combine all the dip ingredients together.
- Shredded chicken: You can’t have buffalo dip without chicken! Use leftover cooked chicken or grab a can of chicken to mix into your dip ingredients. Just make sure the chicken is finely chopped to make it mix easily into the dip.
- Buffalo sauce: The key to adding buffalo flavor to your dip is buffalo sauce. Keep in mind that buffalo sauce is different than hot sauce. We always use Frank’s buffalo sauce when making buffalo chicken dip, but any brand will work for this recipe. Just make sure the bottle says buffalo sauce and not hot sauce.
- Ranch seasoning: Many buffalo dip recipes use ranch dressing as an ingredient, but I have found that this sometimes makes the dip greasy. That’s why I use ranch seasoning mix instead. You can find ranch seasoning mix in the salad dressing section of your grocery store.
- Shredded cheddar cheese: Add even more cheesiness to your buffalo chicken dip with the help of some shredded cheese. You can use any flavor of cheese you want, but I always use cheddar.
How to Make Baked Buffalo Chicken Dip
In addition to having just a handful of ingredients, this easy buffalo chicken dip couldn’t be simpler to make! Just follow these quick steps to prepare your own buffalo dip for your next party.

The first step to making this quick recipe is make sure your cream cheese is softened. You can let it sit at room temperature for around an hour before you mix the ingredients. But since this dip is going to be baked after all the ingredients are mixed, it’s easier just to heat up your cream cheese in the microwave.
Just remove the cream cheese from the wrapper and place it in a microwave safe bowl. Make sure to cover the bowl with a paper towel to keep the cream cheese from popping all over the microwave. Heat it for around 30 seconds, until the cheese is soft and can easily be stirred.
After that, add the cream cheese to a bowl with the remaining ingredients — the chicken, buffalo sauce, shredded cheese, and ranch seasoning. Stir the ingredients until everything is well combined and all the ingredients are coated in cream cheese.

Transfer the mixed dip ingredients to a baking dish and place it in the oven. Bake the dip for around 30 minutes, until it begins to bubble around the edges.
After that, let the dip rest at room tempearture for a few minutes to cool. Then, you can add your garnishes to the top and serve it with your favorite dippers.

Add some toppings. Since this easy recipe is so basic, you can really have fun with the toppings to decorate your dip for your party! Add some color and flavor to your dip by using one or all of these delcicious toppings:
- Chopped green onions
- Shredded cheese
- Buffalo sauce
- Sliced jalapeno peppers
- Black olives
- Chopped chicken
- Blue cheese crumbles
Mix in some blue cheese. Tons of people like blue cheese with their wings. No one in my house is a fan of the crumbly cheese, so we always leave it out of our buffalo chicken dip recipe. But if you enjoy the flavor of blue cheese, you can always mix some into your dip. Just add the blue cheese to the rest of the dip ingredients and follow the instructions as written.
Use canned chicken. This recipe is a great way to use leftover chicken, but if you don’t have any cooked chicken on hand, you can also used canned chicken to make this dip. After opening the can, make sure to drain all the water out, then remove the chicken from the can. Use a fork to break apart the chicken pieces, then mix the chicken into the rest of the dip ingredients.
Is Buffalo Chicken Dip Gluten Free?
If you’re wondering whether buffalo chicken dip is gluten free, I have some good news!~Typically, buffalo chicken dip is gluten free. But it’s always a good idea to check the label or as the cook what ingredients they used to make it. While some recipes don’t use any gluten-containing ingredients, others do.
That’s why it’s a good idea to make your own dip instead of relying on someone else. That way, you know exactly what’s in the recipe before you eat it. This recipe is gluten free when it’s served with gluten free dippers, like tortilla or corn chips, and when you use gluten free buffalo sauce. I suggest using Frank’s buffalo sauce because it’s labeled gluten free.
Why Is My Buffalo Chicken Dip Greasy?
While this recipe is very easy to make, sometimes you run into issues while you’re prearing your dip. One of the biggest issues people have when preparing buffalo dip is too much grease building up on the top of the dip. T
This issue usually happens for a couple different reasons:
- Too much ranch dressing. Adding ranch dressing to your dip is a great way to add even more flavor to the snack and help balance out the spiciness of the buffalo sauce. But adding too much ranch dressing can also cause grease to form while the dip cooks. Instead of using ranch dressing, I suggest using ranch seasoning mix to avoid adding too much liquid to the dip.
- The type of shredded cheese you use. Picking the wrong cheese is another cause of too much grease in your buffalo dip. Some cheese bakes greasier than other cheese, which means you have to be careful when mixing cheese into your dip. I suggest using sharp cheddar cheese because it’s perfect for melting.
- Using dark meat chicken. Dark meat chicken has much more fat than breast meat, which means it could cause your dip to become greasy. Always use finely chopped chicken breast to avoid adding too much fat to your dip.
If your dip has grease pooling up along the top, it’s easy to fix. Start by removing the dip from the oven. Then, use some paper towels to soak up the grease. After that, stir the dip slightly to mix all the ingredients together and return the dish to the oven to bake for a few more minutes.
Can You Leave Buffalo Chicken Dip Out Overnight?
Since this dip is made with cream cheese and chicken, it’s not a good idea to let it sit out for an extended period of time. After the dip has been sitting out for more than two hours, it needs to be chilled to prevent bacteria from growing.
To store your buffalo chicken dip, cover the dish or transfer the leftover dip to an airtight container. Store the dip in the refrigerater and it will stay good for up to four days. When you’re ready to reheat your dip, you can cook it in the oven or warm it up in the microwave.
