DIY Popsicle Stick Pirate Ship
On top of being super simple to make, this cute craft stick pirate ship is also fun to play with! Your kids will have a blast putting the boat together, then playing with it when they’re finished.
But the best party about this popsicle stick pirate ship craft is can be put together with just a few kid-friendly craft supplies! To make your own preschool pirate craft, you’ll need:
- Popsicle sticks: We used large popsicle sticks from the dollar store to make our pirate ship. But any size stick will work for this project. The larger the sticks, the bigger your ship will be when it’s finished. In addition to the five sticks you’ll need to make the body of the ship, you’ll also need an additional stick to glue to the back to hold everything together and one small stick to hold up your flag.
- Black paint: To turn your plain sticks into a pirate ship, you’ll also need some paint. We painted our boat black, but you could also use brown paint or stain to create your own pirate ship at home.
- Printable pirate flag: To turn your popsicle stick boat into a pirate ship, you’ll also need to download my pirate flag template. Keep reading to see how to get your download, then print it out on cardstock to complete the craft.
- Glue: To construct your pirate ship, glue is a must. Hot glue is a good option for gluing the sticks together. But you can also use plain white school glue when making this craft. Just make sure to allow plenty of time for the glue to dry.

How to Make a Pirate Ship Out of Popsicle Sticks
Turning your wooden popsicle sticks into a pirate ship is so easy! Just follow these quick steps to make an adorable pirate ship with a flag with your kids.
The first step to building your pirate ship is to get your sticks ready for building. First, paint all the sticks black or brown. Then, allow the paint to dry completely.
Once the glue is dry, you’ll need to trim the center out of two of the popsicle sticks. I cut around two inches out of the center of each stick to form an opening in the center of the ship. If you’re making this craft with preschoolers, it might be a good idea to cut the stick pieces yourself, then let your little one build the pirate ship.
Once all the pieces are ready, you can start building your ship. Start by lining up three full-sized sticks on a flat surface. Then, place two smaller sticks on top of the large sticks on each side.
Once you have everything lined up, flip all the sticks over and line the ends up. Then, glue some stick pieces on the back of the pirate ship to hold all the sticks together.

Once you have your rocket ship built, the only thing that’s left to do is add the flag! This printable flag is the perfect topper for your pirate activity.

When you have the printable flag downloaded, open the file up in a PDF viewer. Place some cardstock in the printer and print the second page of the printable. Then, use your scissors to cut the flag out around the outer border.
Glue your pirate flag to a small popsicle stick, then attach the stick to the back of the pirate ship right in the center of the boat.

Turn wooden craft sticks into a cute popsicle stick pirate ship with this fun preschool craft.
Materials
- 6 large popsicle sticks
- 1 small popsicle stick
- Printable template
- Cardstocks
- Glue
Tools
- Scissors
Instructions
- Paint the large popsicle sticks black and the small popsicle stick red. Allow the paint to dry completely.
- Cut around one inch from the center of two of the large popsicle sticks.
- Line up the remaining three large popsicle sticks on a flat surface. Place the four small pieces on top to form the top of the boat.
- Use the leftover pieces from the center of the two sticks to hold all the popsicle sticks together. You may also need to trim an extra stick to fit on the back of the ship. Glue the sticks in place and allow the glue to dry completely.
- Download the printable pirate flag and print it on cardstock. Cut it out around the outer border.
- Glue the flag to the end of the red popsicle stick, then glue the other end of the stick to the back of the boat.
