Easy Preschool Beach Craft

Cut out mouth from paper plate fish

The first step to making this cute fish from a paper plate is to cut out the mouth. Simply use your scissors to cut a triangle out of the paper plate, then throw the triangle away because we won’t be using it.

Add eye to paper plate fish

Add a googly eye over the top of the mouth. Secure it in place with glue.

Cupcake wrapper tail on fish from paper plate

Make the paper plate fish’s tail by folding a full-size yellow cupcake wrapper in half, then half again. Glue the pointed end to the back of the paper plate to create a tail on your fish craft.

Cut cupcake wrapper fins for beach craft for kids

Set your paper plate fish aside for a minute so you can prepare your fins. Start by flattening your mini cupcake wrappers, then cut each cupcake wrapper in half. Depending on the size of your plate, you’ll need two to three cupcake wrappers of each color. The plate we used was a small dessert plate leftover from a party, so we only used two wrappers of each color. If you’re using a larger plate, you’ll probably need three.

Glue cupcake wrapper fins on paper plate fish

Create the fins on your fish by gluing a row of mini cupcake wrappers along the center of the plate, overlapping each of the wrappers slightly.

Finish gluing fins onto paper plate fish craft

Continue adding rows of cupcake wrappers to your paper plate until the entire back half of the plate is covered. You can glue them in rows of each color or vary the colors to create a different rainbow effect.

This adorable beach themed craft for preschool is perfect for little hands! It’s great for helping them with pattern recognition and perfect for practicing fine motor skills. They even get to practice using their scissors to create the fins!

And while this cute paper plate fish craft is perfect for preschoolers, there’s no reason kids of any age couldn’t make this fun fish craft! If you’d like to change up your craft, why not consider one of these easy ideas:

  • Paint the plate. If you don’t have a yellow plate at home, any paper plate will work for this craft. If you’d like to spruce up a plain white plate, just add some paint! Paint the fish any color you want, then continue gluing the fins as directed above.
  • Dye your cupcake wrappers. Don’t have mini cupcake wrappers in different colors? If you have white cupcake wrappers, you can dye them by painting them with watercolors or dipping them in water tinted with food coloring. Let the cupcake wrappers dry completely, then cut and glue them according to the instructions.
  • Use full-sized cupcake wrappers. Maybe you don’t have any mini cupcake wrappers. Don’t worry! You can make this craft with full-sized cupcake wrappers, too. Cut the wrappers in half and glue them according to the instructions. You just won’t need as many of the larger cupcake wrappers to cover the paper plate.
