Paper Plate Cupcake Craft

This fun paper plate craft is so simple to make, which means it’s a great option for entertaining kids at a birthday party or keeping the kids occupied on a lazy afternoon.

Since you only need a handful of supplies to put together this cute birthday craft, you probably have everything you need laying around the house right now to make it. And if there’s something on the list that you don’t have, you can grab it at Dollar Tree!

Here’s what you need to make your own paper plate cupcakes with your kids:

• Paper plates. You can use any size paper plates to create your cupcake craft with your kids. Our cupcakes were made with small 6-inch plates because that’s what we had at home already. Full-sized plates would also work to make larger cupcakes.
• Scrapbook paper. Create the cupcake wrappers for your craft with the help of patterned scrapbook paper. You can use any colors or pattern you want!
• Construction paper. To make the sprinkles for your cupcake, you’ll need several different colors of construction paper. Scroll to the bottom of the post to see some other ideas for your own cupcake sprinkles.
• Popsicle stick and washi tape. Turn your plain cupcake into a birthday cupcake with the help of a popsicle stick candle! Decorate the candle with washi tape to add a pop of color.
• Scissors and glue. There is some cutting and gluing involved in this simple craft for kids, so you’ll also need a few school supplies to put it together.

How to Make a Paper Plate Cupcake

Now that you have all your supplies gathered up, it’s time to get crafty! Have some fun with your kids making your own cupcake DIY at home or in the classroom by following these easy instructions.

The first step to turning your paper plate into a cupcake is to cut it in half. One paper plate can make two cupcake crafts!

Next, grab your scrapbook paper and measure a rectangle to make your cupcake wrapper. Start by marking the edges of the plate to know how wide your wrapper needs to be. Then, cut the rectangle to be around 4 inches tall.

Once you have your rectangle cut, you can trim the edges at an angle to make it look more like the shape of a cupcake.

After you cut the cupcake wrapper, glue it to the back of the paper plate.

Then, make your candles by wrapping a popsicle stick in washi tape. If you don’t have any washi tape on hand, you can also paint the popsicle stick or draw a design using markers.

After that, flip the cupcake over and glue the popsicle stick candle to the back of the plate. Hold it in place until the glue dries.

After that, all that’s left to do is add the sprinkles on top! Cut your construction paper into thin strips, then cut the strips into small squares. Use a glue stick to attach the sprinkles to the top of the cupcake and allow the glue to dry.
