On top of being quick and easy to make for kids of any age, this fun art project can be put together with just a handful of craft supplies. All you need to make your own paper plate chicks is:

  • Paper plates: We used small six-inch paper plates to make these cute chicks, but you can use any sized plates you want! Just make sure that your plates don’t have a wax coating on them because it may make them difficult to paint.
  • Googly eyes: You can’t make a kid’s craft without googly eyes, right? Since the craft is made with a paper plate, I suggest using large googly eyes to make your chicks.
  • Yellow paint: To give the chick its signature yellow coat, you’ll need some yellow paint. If you want to skip the mess, your kids can also use yellow marker to color your paper plates. Or grab some yellow paper plates from the party section at Dollar Tree!
  • Orange construction paper: Make the chick’s beak with the help of some orange construction paper. You’ll also need scissors to cut the paper.
  • Yellow feathers: Finish decorating your cute chick craft with some yellow feathers to serve as the bird’s wings.
  • Glue: To hold everything together, you’ll also need some glue. I used a low heat glue gun to attach the eyes, beak and feathers to the paper plate. But traditional school glue will also work, you’ll just have to wait a litle bit longer for the glue to dry if you go this route.

The first step to making this fun craft stick project is to paint the paper plate yellow. I used acrylic craft paint to paint each of the sticks because it’s safe for kids to use. If you want to skip the mess of paint, try letting your kids color the paper plates yellow with washable markers or crayons. You can also use yellow paper plates from the party section.

Once the paint has dried, you can start decorating your chicks. First, add the googly eyes to the top of the chick. I found some googly eye stickers that are perfect for crafting with toddlers! But you can also attach the googly eyes with a litle bit of glue.

After that, use your scissors to cut a small triangle out of orange construction paper. Attach the triangle beak under the eyes with a small amount of glue.

The only thing left to do is attach the yellow feather wings to each side of the chick. Glue the end of the feather to the each side of the face and hold the feathers in place until the glue is dry.
