But the best part about this simple DIY is that you need just handful of supplies you probably have laying around the house right now to make it. And if there’s something on the list that you don’t have, you can grab it at Dollar Tree!

Here’s what you need to make your own paper plate basketball with your kids:

  • Paper plates. You can use any size paper plates to create your basketball craft with your kids. Our basketballs were made with small 6-inch plates because that’s what we had at home already. Full-sized plates would also work to make larger basketballs.
  • Orange paint. To turn your plain white plates into basketballs, you’ll need some orange paint. I suggest using acrylic craft paint because it provides a nice, thick coat.
  • Pom poms and clothespins. To give the painted basketballs a textured look, we used pom poms to paint the plates instead of a traditional paint brush. Use a clothespins to hold the pom poms in place while your kids paint to keep their hands from getting messy!
  • Black marker. Finish making your own basketball craft with a black marker to draw the lines on the ball! You can also use black paint and a paintbrush to do this part of the art project.

Now that you have all your supplies gathered up, it’s time to get crafty! Have some fun with your kids making your own basketball DIY at home or in the classroom by following these easy instructions.

orange paper plate

The first step to turning your paper plate into a basketball is to do some painting. We used orange paint to give it the look of a traditional basketball. First, pour the paint onto a paper plate. Then, pinch the ends of the clothespin to open it. Place a pom pom in the center of the clip and close the clip to hold the pom pom in place.

After that, your kids can hold the end of the clothespin and dip the pom pom into the orange paint. Then, dab the paint all over the paper plate until it’s fully covered. The dabbing motion will help give the paint a more textured look when it’s dry!

When the paint is completely dry, grab your black marker. First, draw a horizontal line across the center of the plate.

Then, draw a vertical line across the center of the plate to form a cross. After that, draw one curved line on each side of the plate to finish giving the plate the look of a basketball!
