Mardi Gras Craft for Toddlers
Finding simple crafts a toddler can make can sometimes be difficult. But this easy craft uses just three supplies, which means it’s perfect for little ones. To make your own Mardi Gras bead craft, you’ll need a few kid’s craft supplies, including:
- Plastic beads: I found these metallic beads at Dollar Tree and they were perfect for making our own Mardi Gras necklaces at home.
- Twine or string: The yellow twine we used for our Mardi Gras beads is also from Dollar Tree and it worked perfectly for holding all the beads together.
- Plastic needle: Threading a string through a small hole in a bead can be difficult for toddlers. To make this threading craft easier, use a plastic needle.
So, gather up your supplies and get started on your own toddler Mardi Gras craft right now!
How to Make Mardi Gras Beads
The first step to making your toddler Mardi Gras craft is to get your supplies ready. Since you’ll be making Mardi Gras beads, you won’t need all the colors of beads that come in the package. That means you’ll need to separate the colors.
This is the first step to getting started on your Mardi Gras bead craft — sorting. Your toddler can help you sort the purple, green, and gold beads from the rest of the beads. We poured all the beads into a large bowl. Then, I started sorting by placing a couple of green beads in one bowl, a couple of purple beads into another bowl, and a couple of gold beads in a third bowl. Then, let your toddler help sort out the rest of the beads.
When you have all the beads sorted, you can start making your Mardi Gras bead necklace. If you’ll be making a three-strand necklace like we did, start by cutting three pieces of string long enough to fit around your toddler’s neck. Make sure the necklace will also be big enough to fit over your toddler’s head to make it easy to put on.
Then, tie all three strings together with a knot on the end. This will help hold all the beads on the necklace while your toddler is stringing them onto the twine.
Next, you’ll need to get the twine ready for your toddler by placing the plastic needle on the end of one of the strings. Thread the string through the eye of the needle, then pull the end through a couple of inches.
After that, your toddler can start threading the beads onto the string. Using the needle will make it easy for your toddler to add the beads to the string without worry about them having issues putting the string into the hole.
Just remember that this should be a supervised activity. If you have a toddler who likes to put things in their mouth, they’re sure to give one of those beads a try when you aren’t watching. Make sure to keep an eye on your little one while they make their necklace!
Continue threading the beads onto the string until all three strands are full. Then, tie all three strands together at the other end to hold them in place. Finish by tying the two ends of the strands together to form a necklace.

Materials
- Purple, green, and gold plastic beads
- String
- Plastic needle
Instructions
- Cut three pieces of string equal lengths. Tie all the strings together with a knot on one end.
- Place the needle on the end of one of the strings and thread the purple beads onto the string. When the string is full, remove the needle and place it on the second string. Add the green beads to the second string and repeat the process with the gold beads on the third string.
- When all three strings are full, tie the three strands together with a knot on the end. Then, loop the ends together and tie them with a knot to create a necklace.
