How to Use Old Bricks in the Garden

But finding creative ways for how to use old bricks in the garden is easier said than done! Most of the ways I found for using bricks in the garden didn’t really fit with my own style. But since we had lots of spare time to work in the yard this spring and summer, my husband and I decided to upgrade our garden area.
While I’ve had a vegetable garden in the backyard for years, we had never put a fence around the garden area. That means I lost a lot of my crops to deer and other animals. But this year, my husband built an awesome rustic wooden fence all the way around the garden. And when the fence was done, I knew I needed to figure out what to do with old bricks in the garden.
That’s when I decided I would figure out how to make a flower bed with bricks. And I love how my brick flower bed turned out! To make your own flower bed with bricks, you’ll need:
- Old bricks
- Shovel
- Tiller
- Garden hoe
- Flowers
So, gather up all your gardening supplies and start digging! Here’s how to make a flower bed with bricks:
How to Make a Flower Bed with Bricks

The hardest part about this DIY project prepping your garden bed. It helps to have a garden tiller at home to loosen the dirt before you start making your brick flower bed. Simply go over the area a few times to really get the dirt dug up. This will not only make it easier to plant your flowers, but it will also help secure the bricks in place as you put your brick garden bed together.
After the soil is ready for planting, use a garden hoe or garden rack to move the dirt around and create an even layer of soil. Then, grab a small shovel and dig a shallow trench around the outer edge of your garden bed. Make the trench just wide enough for a brick to sit in. Once the trench is dug around the board, use the back of your shovel to flatten the area and press the dirt down to create a solid foundation for your walls.
Now it’s time to start adding your bricks! Place the bricks along the border until the entire first row is complete.

If you’re creating a flower square or rectangular flower bed with 90 degree corners, you’ll have a much easier time than me! My brick flower bed has curved edges, so it took a little bit of work to find the perfect bricks to create the curves.
If you’re using old bricks, like I did, I suggest finding ones with broken edges for your curved areas. While they may not fit together perfectly, the open spots won’t be as noticeable when you add your second layer of bricks.

Continue adding all the bricks in your first layer. As you can see, my bricks came in all sizes and shapes. That only added to the rustic look of my brick flower bed!

Now that you have your first row finished, it’s time to add the second row of bricks. Simply stack your second row of bricks right on top of the first row. But be sure to alternate the seams to make your structure a little more sturdy.
To keep the seams from lining up, I used broken bricks in between some of my full-sized bricks. This helped stagger the joints and give my flower bed with bricks even more rustic charm.

After you have finished both walls of your brick garden bed, you can start planting! If you’ll be using your brick garden as a raised garden bed, you’ll need to add more soil to the bed. Otherwise, you can plant your flowers right into the ground. Since my garden bed is located on the front of my vegetable garden, I decided to use it as an herb garden and flower garden. I added some flower plants, like coneflower and black-eyed Susan, that attract bees, along with herbs like basil, oregano, mint, and dill.
