Dollar Tree Christmas Countdown
Finding cheap and easy decoration ideas is one of the best ways to save money during the holiday season. But just because you’re saving money on your DIY holiday decor doesn’t mean they have to look cheap. This adorable DIY Dollar Tree Christmas countdown chalk board is so cute, no one will ever know you purchased the supplies you need to make it at the dollar store.
To make your Dollar Tree countdown sign, you’ll just need a few simple supplies from the dollar store, including:
- Mini chalkboard: This fun holiday countdown is made using a mini chalkboard from the craft aisle. My store had two different varieties — this one with a stand on the bottom and another with a easle stand. Either type of mini chalkboard will work for this cute holiday craft.
- Red paint: I used red acrylic paint to paint the wood frame around my chalkboard. Just use the color that fits best with your decor. Natural wood stain or white chalk paint would look amazing with some other rustic farmhouse Christmas decorations.
- Red vinyl and transfer tape: Did you know you can purchase vinyl at Dollar Tree? Check your store’s craft aisle to see if they have any! Mine had red, black and white sheets. And the best part is that they come in 12″ x 24″ sheets — for just $1! If you can’t find vinyl at your store, any red vinyl and transfer paper will work for this project!
- Christmas countdown SVG file: Keep reading to see how to get your copy of this free Christmas countdown SVG file to make your own holiday chalkboard.
- Cricut: To cut the words for your DIY farmhouse Christmas coundown, you’ll need a cutting machine to cut the vinyl. I use the Cricut Explore Air 2 and love it!

DIY Christmas Countdown Sign
Before you can add your vinyl decoration to your chalkboard, you’ll need to take a minute to prepare the board for decorating!
Start by working on the wood frame. If you plan on painting the chalk board, start by picking your color and painting the border. If you’re worried your paint will get on the chalkboard, try placing some painter’s tape over the black section of the board before painting to protect it.
Continue painting the border until it’s completely covered. When the paint is dry, you can transfer your vinyl design to the front of the chalkboard.
Use your Cricut weeding tool to remove all the extra vinyl surrounding your Christmas words. Then place a piece of transfer tape on top to transfer the words from the vinyl backing to the ornament sign.
Make sure your design is properly centered at the bottom of the chalk board. And don’t forget to leave plenty of space abover the design so you can write down the number of days leading up to Christmas on top!
After the design is in the right place, use a credit card or other flat object to transfer the vinly to the chalkboard. Then, carefully pull off the transfer tape.
After your Christmas countdown is finished, you’ll need chalk to use it. Each day, write down the number of days until Christmas on the chalkboard to help remind everyone in your family how close the holiday is getting!
