This air freshener works in two different ways to make your home smell amazing. First, the combination of essential oils provides a fresh scent in the room. Second, the baking soda helps absorb odors in the air.
That makes this DIY air freshener perfect for homes with pets (and boys lol)! The baking soda is great at absorbing all those strange pet smells and the essential oils keep the air smelling fresh all the time. It’s such a useful farmhouse DIY project!
Make Your DIY Air Freshener

To make this cute DIY air freshener, you’ll need a few ingredient — most of which you probably already have at home! This easy recipe is made up of baking soda and your favorite essential oils. To put the air freshener together, you’ll need a small jelly jar and some fabric scraps.

Start by filling your jar three-quarters of the way full of baking soda. The baking soda is an essential element of this DIY air freshener. It’s great for absorbing odors from the air. That makes it perfect for creating an all natural air freshener for your home!
Add Essential Oils

Next, add your favorite essential oils to the baking soda. I used lemon and lime oils to create a citrus scent for my air freshener. Add around 20 drops total to the baking soda to ensure the scent lasts for a while. For mine, I used an even mixture of 10 drops lemon oil and 10 drops lime oil. There are so many great combinations you can make for your air freshener! Here are a few other suggestions:
- 15 drops lavender with 5 drops tea tree for a relaxing scent
- 15 drops lavender with 5 drops peppermint for a refreshing scent
- 10 drops orange with 5 drops lemon for a fresh citrus scent
- 5 fir or cedarwood, 5 orange, and 5 lemon for a woodsy scent

After choosing your essential blend, place the lid on your jar and shake it up to mix the oils into the baking soda. Then, grab a fabric scrape and cut it into a square small enough to cover the opening in the top of the jar.

Finally, finish by placing the ring from the jar lid (without the round insert) on top of the fabric square and twisting it into place. The fabric will allow the scent of the essential oils in your DIY air freshener to be released into the air. The scents should last around a month. Once they start to fade, simply add some more essential oils to the baking soda and shake it up to mix.

How long do they typically last for?
The scent lasts a couple weeks. But when it begins to fade, you can just add a few more drops of essential oil and shake it up again.
