Ribbon Christmas Tree Ornament

You’ll need just three simple craft supplies to make your own cinnamon stick ribbon tree ornament. How easy is that? Keep reading to see how to make your own mini Christmas trees in a matter of minutes.

To make your ribbon Christmas tree craft, you’ll just need these three craft supplies:

Ribbon: I used black and white buffalo check ribbon for my holiday trees. The ribbon is wire-edged and 1/2-inch wide.
Cinnamon sticks: Fresh cinnamon sticks make the trunk for these easy ornaments. On top of adding a rustic style to your holiday decorations, cinnamon sticks also add a delicious scent to your decor!
Twine: To hang the ornaments on the tree, I used a piece of twine to create a loop on top of the cinnamon stick. You could also use leftover ribbon for this step in the crafting process.

In addition to these simple craft supplies, I suggest using your hot glue gun as you put your DIY ornaments together. The glue will help secure the ribbon in place. That ensures the pieces don’t loosen or fall off as the ornament is hanging on the Christmas tree.

How to Make a Cinnamon Stick Ribbon Tree Ornament

How do you make Christmas tree ornaments with ribbon?

To make your own buffalo check ornaments for your Christmas tree, start by cutting eight pieces of ribbon around six inches long. The exact length doesn’t matter because you’ll be trimming your ribbon after attaching it to the cinnamon stick. Just cut each piece of ribbon roughly the same size.

Lay four pieces of ribbon flat on a the table and line the ends up as best you can. Draw a line of hot glue down the center of the ribbon. Then press the cinnamon stick into the glue and hold it in place until the glue dries.

Tie each piece of ribbon around the cinnamon stick and pull the ends tight. Since you’re using glue to hold the ribbo in place, you only need to tie it once. You could tie it in a knot if you want your ribbon to be extra-secure.

Once you have your ribbon tied, you’ll see that there’s a space on the cinnamon stick between each ribbon. Fill in each of those spaces with another piece of ribbon.

Place a drop of glue in the center of your ribbon and press it in place in one of the open spots. Tie that piece of ribbon to secure it.

Continue adding ribbon until each of the open spots on the cinnamon stick is covered. Leave a small space on the top of the cinnamon stick to attach your twine loop.

Now that you have all your ribbon “branches” on your tree, you’ll see that they’re all uneven. To give your ornament the appearance of a tree, you need to cut your ribbon at an angle to creat a triangle shape.

Since the ribbon doesn’t really lay flat, I found it was easier to cut each individual ribbon at an angle. Just make sure you cut each ribbon slightly shorter as you work your way from the bottom to the top of the tree. Once you have one side cut, repeat the process on the other side of the tree.

Finish creating your ribbon tree ornament by adding a loop at the top of the craft so you can hang int on your Christmas tree. Cut a six-inch piece of twine and fold it over to create a loop. Use your hot glue gun to attach the ends of the twine to the back of the ribbon Christmas tree.

After attaching your twine loop, all you have left to do is hang your ornaments on your Christmas tree!

If you’re looking for ways to change up the look of these farmhouse style ribbon tree ornaments, here are a few ideas:

Use different ribbon. I love the look of black and white buffalo check, but if you want something a little more Christmasy, try using a holiday-themed ribbon to make this craft. I suggest picking a small ribbon with a wire edge to ensure the branches stand up on their own.
Make it with fabric. If you can’t find a ribbon pattern you like, try making your cinnamon stick Christmas tree ornaments with fabric instead. Cut thin strips of fabric and tye them on the cinnamon stick in the same way you would tie the ribbon.
Use real sticks. I love the rustic look of cinnamon sticks when making these holiday trees. But if you don’t have any on hand, take advantage of nature to make this craft! Grab some sticks and twigs from your yard and decorate them with ribbon to create cute rustic trees.
