4th of July Craft for Kids
This simple fourth of July craft is a great activity for kids of any age. Young kids can have fun playing with glitter — don’t worry, I have a simple way to contain the mess. And older kids will have a blast creating different fireworks designs!
The best part about this art project is that you probably already have everything you need at home rigt now. To create your own glitter fireworks at home, you’ll need:
- Black paper: Recreate the night sky for your fireworks by using black paper as the backdrop of your craft. You can use black construction paper or cardstock to create your fireworks painting.
- Glitter: To make the fireworks sparkly, you’ll need some glitter. We used gold glitter, but you could give your painting a more patriotic look with the help of red, white, and blue glitter instead.
- Glue: To create the shape of your fireworks, your kids will use glue. The glue will act as the “paint” in this art project, giving the glitter something to stick to.
- Box: Keep the glitter contained with the help of a box! Just place your paper inside the box and let your kids go crazy with the glitter.

How Do You Make Glitter Fireworks?
Before I get into how to make glitter fireworks, let’s talk about how to set up your crafting area to keep the mess to a minimum. I know that when you saw the word “glitter” in the supply list, you’re probably like “no way!” But hear me out!
There’s a simple way to give your kids a chance to create glitter art without having a huge mess on your hands! Just use a box!
Find a box that’s big enough for the piece of paper to sit in. Then, use a pair of sharp scissors to remove all the flaps from the top of the box. I found that short Amazon boxes work well for this because the sides aren’t too tall for your kids to reach in and paint. After that, just place the paper inside the box.
The only issue I have come across when using this method is that it’s hard for younger kids, like toddlers and preschoolers, to see what they’re painting if you put the box on a table. The best solution for this is to spread some newspapers or a drop cloth on the floor and let them make their glitter fireworks on the floor instead of the table.
Once you have your set-up complete, it’s time to start creating some fireworks. Start by creating fireworks shapes using white school glue. Just squirt lines of glue on the paper, making it look like a firework.
Immediately after you’re finished drawing the fireworks shape, pour a bunch of glue all over the top of the glue. Just continue sprinkling glitter over the top of the glue until all the lines are covered. If you’re using just one color, you can just dump the glitter on. But if you plan to make your fireworks different colors, you’ll need to be a little more careful as you add the glitter to the page, making sure to pour the glitter only over the the line for that color.
After all the glue on the firework is covered, lift the paper up and tap the edge on the box to knock loose all the glitter that isn’t stuck to the glue. Then keep repeating the same process until your page is covered in fireworks bursts.
When your page is fully decorated, set the box up in a place where your kids can’t reach it to give the glue a chance to dry. It will probably take several hours for the glue to dry completely. Once the glue has hardened, give the paper a few more taps inside the box to shake loose any glitter that isn’t completely stuck. After that, you can hang your fireworks to display them.
