To make your own ghost out of a mop, you’ll need just a few simple dollar store items, including:

  • White mop head. Check out the household section of your dollar store to find this white mop head to use as the body of your ghost.
  • Clear glass vase. To hold up the body of your ghost, you’ll need something for the mop to rest on. I used a clear glass vase because it holds up the ghost without showing.
  • Mini twinkle lights. Add a fun accent to your mop ghost with the help of some lights. I found some cute light-up spiders in my store that were perfect!
  • Witch gnome. I remove the hat from a witch gnome decoration found in the seasonal section of the store. But you could also use the hat from a witch hat headband or even a child-size witch hat.
  • Black felt. Check the craft aisle of your store to grab a piece of black felt to make the eyes for your ghost. If you can’t find a piece of black felt, you can also use black fabric, a black foam sheet, or black cardstock.
  • Mini candy bucket. To give your ghost a fun vibe, add a mini candy bucket! You can find these fun pumpkin buckets in the seasonal section of the store.

Do I have to use supplies from Dollar Tree to make this craft?

No! Any white mop head will work to make your own ghost craft! You can also replace any of the other elements of the craft with items you find at Wal-Mart or your favorite craft store.

If you want your ghost to light up when you’re finished, start by adding the lights to the inside of your glass vase. It’s a good idea to use fairy lights that have a wire string so you can wrap them around the inside of the entire jar.

Next, place the mop on top of the vase, making sure the vase is completely covered on all sides. The mop should rest right on top of the vase. But if you want it to be more secure, you can use your hot glue gun to attach it to the top of the vase.

After that, remove the witch hat from your gnome if you’re using this element of the craft. I simply used a pair of scissors to cut the hat off the gnome’s head.

Next, attach the hat to the top of the mop to cover the plastic part of the mop head. Use your hot glue gun to secure the hat in place.

After that, cut two circles out of your black felt fabric. Attach the round eyes directly under the hat using your hot glue gun.

Finish by attaching your mini candy bucket to the front of the ghost. I attached two pieces of the mop strings to each side of the bucket to make it look like the ghost is holding it.

  • Use a different body. I love the look of the mop head as the body of your ghost! But if you can’t find a plain white mop head, you have some other options! Check the craft aisle for a piece of white fabric. Or take a look at the automotive section to get a white cleaning cloth to use as your ghost’s body.
  • Use a different hat. If you can’t find a cute witch hat to decorate the top of your ghost’s head, take a look around the store for other ideas! You may be able to find a cute had to cover the top of the mop. Or use some flowers to create a topper for your ghost.
  • Try a different base. A glass base is great for adding lights to your ghost. But if you don’t plan on lighting up your craft, you can also use a paper towel holder or even an empty cardboard tube!
