Easy Halloween Donuts

But the best part about this simple Halloween donut recipe is that you only need a handful of ingredients to prepare them! To make your own spooky chocolate donuts, you’ll need:
- Chocolate cake mix. You can use any chocolate cake mix to prepare this easy treats — even gluten free cake mix!
- Egg
- Melted butter
- Milk
- Chocolate frosting. To create the glaze on top of the donuts, use premade chocolate frosting. Any type of icing will work for this simple glaze, including fudge, dark chocolate, or milk chocolate.
- Candy eyes. Give your Halloween breakfast a spooky look with the help of candy eyes. I used two different sizes of candy eyes to make the donuts look extra silly.
- Halloween sprinkles. The final item you’ll need to decorate your chocolate donuts is sprinkles. I used orange and black nonpareils to add a Halloween look to the top of each treat.
How to Make Halloween Donuts
You’re going to love how easy it is to make this cake mix donut recipe! Thanks to the use of cake mix, half your prep work is already done for you!
To make this easy Halloween dessert recipe, start by combining the chocolate cake mix, melted butter, egg, and milk together in a meduim bowl. Use a hand mixer to blend the ingredients together until a thick batter forms.
Once the batter ingredients are well combined, I suggest transferring the mixture to a large piping bag or gallon sized zip-top bag. This will make filling the donut pan a little easier.
Grease each cup of your donut pan with nonstick cooking spray, then cut the tip off your piping bag.
Pipe a circle of batter around each donut cup, filling the cup around halfway full. Continue this process until all the batter has been used.
Bake your chocolate donuts in the oven for 15 to 18 minutes. You’ll know they’re done baking when the cake bounces back after you lightly press it with your finger.
When the donuts are finished cooking, remove the pans from the oven and allow the cooked donuts to cool in the pan for around five minutes. After that, carefully flip the pans over onto a wire cooling rack. If the donuts stick to the pan, carefully run a flat spatula around the edges to loosen them.
Once all the donuts are removed from the pan, allow them to cool completely on the wire rack.
Once the donuts are cool, it’s time to start decorating! First, place your jar of frosting in the microwave for around 30 seconds to soften it. Then, carefully spread the melted icing over the top of each donut.
While the frosting is still melted, top each donut with some candy eyes and add the sprinkles. You’ll need to work quickly because once the icing cools, it will harden and your sprinkles won’t stick to the top.
Continue decorating until each of the donuts are topped with candy eyes and sprinkles, then enjoy your adorable Halloween treats.
Halloween Donut Ideas
See how easy it is to make your own homemade donuts for your kids this Halloween? And once you try this simple recipe, you’re going to want to make it for every holiday!
In addition to being simple to make, this quick recipe is also easy to customize. These recipe adjustments and additions will help you create a delicious dessert for any Halloween celebration:
- Make gluten free Halloween donuts. It’s easy to turn this into a gluten free recipe. Just substitute the chocolate cake mix with gluten free chocolate cake mix (my favorite is King Arthur Flour gluten free chocolate cake mix). All the other ingredients listed in the recipe should be gluten free, but it’s always a good idea to check your labels before using any ingredients — especially the sprinkles and candy eyes.
- Try different cake mix flavors. The chocolate cake mix gives these donuts a dark Halloween look, but it’s not the only flavor you can use! Plain white cake mix is great for making ghostly treats or use red velvet cake mix for a bloody look.
- Add different decorations. Instead of creating monster donuts, why not get creative with your decorations? You could use white icing to make ghost donuts or red icing to give the donuts a bloody appearance.
