Easy DIY Rae Dunn Christmas Ornaments
Making your own simple Christmas crafts is a great way to decorate your home for the holidays. And if you love Rae Dunn style, making your own crafts is a fun way to decorate without having to go on a hunt to find new Rae Dunn pieces. This Christmas, add a little bit of farmhouse charm to your tree by making your own Rae Dunn Christmas ornaments with this easy tutorial.

DIY Rae Dunn Christmas Ornaments
You’ll need just a handful of simple supplies to make your own DIY Rae Dunn Christmas ornaments, including my free cut file to add your own Rae Dunn inspired words. Keep reading to see how to get your free Rae Dunn SVG!
To make your Rae Dunn Christmas ornaments DIY, you’ll just need a a few of simple craft supplies, including:
- Wood ornaments: I found these cute blank wood ornaments at Hobby Lobby, but you can get similar wood blanks on Amazon.
- White and black paint: To give these ornaments a farmhouse look, I used white and black chalk paint to decorate my plain wood ornaments.
- Black vinyl and transfer paper: Any black vinyl and transfer paper will work for this project!

- Cricut: To cut the words for your DIY Rae Dunn ornaments, you’ll need a cutting machine to cut the vinyl. I use the Cricut Explore Air 2 and love it!
Free Rae Dunn SVG
To make your own Rae Dunn ornaments, you’ll need to start by downloading my free decal SVG file. The printable includes a variety of Rae Dunn inspired words for your ornaments. To get your own, simply subscribe to my email list, cut the words with your favorite cutting machine, and apply them to your painted ornaments.
After subscribing, you’ll receive a welcome email with a password exclusively for my subscribers. If you don’t see the message shortly after submitting your contact information, be sure to check your junk or spam folders and add my email as to your safe list! I’ll keep you up-to-date on new freebies and other posts throughout the week.
After downloading the SVG file, upload it into Design Space. After loading the SVG, you’ll notice that each letter of each word is a separate element. When you have decided which words you want to use for your Rae Dunn ornaments, use your mouse to select all the letters of the word, then group them together with the group function in the upper right corner.
Next, weld the letters together so they stay as a group when you’re ready to cut them. After that, you can resize your words to fit on your ornaments. As you’re resizing, make sure to measure the width and height of your ornaments. You want to be sure all the letters fit on the front of the ornaments.
When all your words are the correct size, you can start cutting. Just hit the Make It button at the top and send your Rae Dunn Christmas words to your Cricut to cut.
Use your Cricut weeding tool to remove all the extra vinyl surrounding your words. Then place a piece of transfer tape on top to make it easy to transfer the words from the vinyl backing to the ornaments.
Rae Dunn Inspired Christmas Ornaments
Now that you have your vinyl words ready to go, you can start getting your wood ornaments ready. So, grab a paintbrush and some paint, and let’s turn those boring wood ornaments into cute Rae Dunn Christmas ornaments.
Start by giving your ornaments a base coat of white chalk paint. Use as many coats as you need to fully cover the plain wood ornament.
Then, accent your ornaments with a little bit of black paint. I added black paint around the outer border and at the top of the ornament. This gives each ornament a little bit of contrast with the white front.
All all the paint to dry completely, then add your vinyl words to the front. Place the words on the front of each ornament. Then use a credit card or other flat object to transfer the vinyl letters to the front of the ornament.
After adding all the words to your ornaments, place a red ribbon through the top hole. That way, you can hang your Rae Dunn inspired ornaments on your Christmas tree.
To add a little more farmhouse charm to my ornaments, I accented the top of each ornament with a small buffalo check bow. To do this on your ornaments, simply tie a small bow with buffalo check ribbon. Then use your hot glue gun to glue it to the top. And that’s it! How simple is that?

Materials
- Wood ornaments
- White paint
- Black paint
- Black vinyl
- Cut file
- Transfer tape
- Red ribbon
Tools
- Paintbrush
- Cricut cutting machine
- Cricut weeding tool
Instructions
- Paint the wood ornaments white and accent the top and sides with black paint.
- Upload the cut file into Design Space and ungroup the words. Delete the words you won’t be cutting.
- Select each word and group the letters together, then weld the word. Continue until all the words are welded.
- Resize each word to fit on the ornament.
- Cut the files on black vinyl. Weed out extra vinyl until only the letters are left.
- Use transfer tape to transfer the words to each ornament.
Tie a piece of red ribbon to the top of the ornament to hang it on the tree.

I am using Silhouette Business Edition but I can not upload the SVG. I get a “The file type you are attempting to access is not supported”. Any suggestions?
Shronda, I think you have to have the Designer Edition of Silhouette Studio to upload SVGs. But you may be able to use the JPEG of the text as a cut file. I would give that a try to see if it works. I think that’s what I used to do when trying to cut designs with my Silhouette, but it’s been so long since I’ve used it, I can’t remember for sure.
