To make this simple recipe for gluten free cheeseburger meatballs, you’ll need just a handful of ingredients:
- Meatballs. The most important part of this recipe is the meatballs. I used Farm Rich 100% Beef frozen meatballs for this recipe to make it super easy. You can also use a from-scratch meatball recipe.
- Ketchup and mustard. Give your meatballs a classic cheeseburger flavor with the help of some classic toppings — ketchup and mustard!
- American cheese. You can use any sliced cheese you want when making your own meatballs. But American cheese will give it a classic cheeseburger flavor.
- Toppings. To top my cheeseburger bites, I used a few different toppings, including iceberg lettuce, dill pickle chips, and a grape tomato.

How to Make Cheeseburger Meatballs
After gathering up your ingredients, you’ll just need a few minutes of prep work to make this simple appetizer recipe.

Start by lining a baking sheet with foil to contain the mess from the sauce you’ll add to your meatballs. Then, arrange the meatballs in an even layer on the baking sheet. Make sure you have a little bit of space between the meatballs to keep them from sticking together as they cook.
Place the meatballs in a 400 degree oven to bake for 15 to 20 minutes, until they’re just beginning to brown.

While the meatballs are baking, mix together the ketchup and mustard in a small bowl. Then, remove the pan and brush the ketchup mixture all over each of the meatballs.
Return the pan to the oven to bake for 5 to 10 minutes, until the sauce begins to bubble on the pan.

While the sauce is cooking on the meatballs, cut each of your American cheese slices into six small pieces. Remove the pan from the oven one more time and place one small piece of cheese on top of each meatball.
Return the pan to the oven to bake for another 5 to 10 minutes, until the cheese on top is melted.

Finally, after removing the pan from the oven, allow the meatballs to cool slightly. Then, stack a pickle, a few pieces of lettuce, and a tomato on top of one of the meatballs. Carefully slide a long toothpick into the top of the stack to secure all the pieces in place. Repeat the process with the remaining meatballs and enjoy!
Cheeseburger Meatball Recipe Ideas
While these cheeseburger meatballs are simple to make, sometimes questions arise about the recipe and the ingredients. Here are the answers to some common questions about making your own gluten free meatballs.

Where can I find frozen gluten free meatballs?
I was able to find my Farm Rich frozen meatballs at Kroger, but you can also find all three gluten free brands (Farm Rich, Rosina, and Cooked Perfect) at Wal-Mart. You’ll need to check your store to see if they’re available in your area.
You can also find gluten free frozen meatballs at Aldi. The store’s Bremer frozen meatballs are made with no gluten containing ingredients. And Sam’s Club Member’s Mark meatballs are also gluten free!
Can I cook these meatballs in the slow cooker?
While there are tons of great slow cooker meatball recipes, this particular recipe won’t work in your crockpot. You’ll want the sauce to caramelize and the cheese to melt on each meatball separately, which would be difficult to do in the crockpot.
Can I use different toppings?
Of course! The beauty of this fun recipe is that you can customize it to suit your own tastes. There are a variety of fun toppings you can add to your own cheeseburger bites, including:
- Bacon
- Jalapeno slices
- BBQ sauce
- Onions
- Mushrooms
- Tomato slices
- Mini pickles
How do I store cheeseburger meatballs?
I wouldn’t suggest making your meatballs ahead of time because the fresh toppings will begin to wilt after a while. But if you have leftovers, you can store them in the fridge in an airtight container for up to four days. I would suggest removing the toppings from the meatballs before storing to keep everything fresh longer.
