Making DIY Christmas ornaments is one of my favorite ways to get ready for the holiday season. Right now, I’m working on making a ton of new farmhouse DIY projects, like ornaments for my Christmas tree! I’m so excited about this adorable snow globe ornament DIY — it’s beautiful and easy to make!

On top of being adorable, this snow globe ornament DIY is also super cheap to make. I got the blank snow globe ornament from the Dollar Tree, then found these adorable mini trees at Hobby Lobby. You can also purchase them on Amazon.

Make Your Own Snow Globe Ornament DIY

This rustic snow globe ornament DIY is so simple to make! They’re so easy to make, your kids can even get in on the fun. Start by gathering all your supplies. To make these DIY farmhouse ornaments, you’ll need:

• blank snow globe ornament
• cotton balls
• mini trees
• glitter snow
• burlap
• twine
• hot glue gun

The first step to making your own water-free snow globe ornament DIY is to create a blanket of snow on the bottom of the ornament. And I found the best way to do this is with one simple ingredient — a cotton ball! Simply spread a little bit of glue around the bottom of the ornament, then pull a cotton ball apart to fluff it up and stick it to the bottom.

Work your cotton ball around the bottom of the ornament to create a spot for each of your trees. To secure the mini trees in place, put a drop of hot glue on the base of the tree and press it into the spot. Just make sure you glue the tree to the ornament lid and not the cotton ball. If you glue it to the top of the cotton, it won’t stand up straight inside your snow globe!

Now that you have your little winter wonderland scene created inside your snow globe ornament, it’s time to add the most important element — the snow.

I love how traditional snow globes include a liquid inside that helps it look like the snow is floating around inside the globe. But that’s not very practical for a snow globe ornament DIY. First of all, liquid can get messy — especially when you think about the fact that you’ll be storing this ornament to use for Christmas next year. And secondly, this particular snow globe ornament blank has a hanger on top that isn’t water-tight. So, any liquid that’s place inside would just leak out.

But with this easy water-free snow globe ornament DIY, you don’t have to worry about messy leaks! Just pour a little bit of glitter snow inside the globe part of your snow globe ornament, then carefully screw the lid in place.

I love how the snow just rests around your fluffy cotton ball snow blanket, making it look like it just snowed inside the winter wonderland. To make it snow inside the snow globe, just shake it!

Add a Farmhouse Touch

While you could stop at the last step listed above and have an adorable water-free snow globe, I wanted my snow globe ornament DIY to have a farmhouse feel. So, I added some burlap to give it a more rustic look.

Start by cutting two small squares of burlap — just enough to cover the base of the snow globe. Lay the burlap flat on the table and stagger them so the corners don’t line up.

Place some glue on the bottom of the snow globe ornament, and attach the burlap to the base of the snow globe. Then, add a few drops of glue around the edge of the lid to make sure the burlap stays in place. Finally, tie a little jute twine bow around the burlap to finish the farmhouse look.

To complete the farmhouse look on my snow globe ornament DIY, I removed the plain silver string on the top of the snow globe that’s used to hang the ornament from the tree. I replaced that string with a piece of twine to make it look a little bit more rustic.

I found these cute ornaments at Dollar Tree in the Christmas section. The store also had blank snow globes if you would rather create a traditional snow globe with liquid inside.

Can I use something other than burlap?

I love the rustic look the burlap gives this snow globe ornament DIY, but you can definitely replace it with fabric. Just pick a fabric that matches the rest of your holiday decor. Then, follow the instructions as written to decorate the bottom of your snow globe with it.

Can kids make this snow globe ornament DIY?

This simple DIY Christmas ornament is so easy to do, your kids can definitely put it together! Since this craft uses hot glue, I suggest that you provide supervision while your kids are making the craft.
